GROUPLOVE

Having two teenage daughters I have no control of the music playing in my car if either or both are passengers. Because of this I get exposed to a lot of new alternative music. Both are huge Grouplove fans. And I see why. The band’s new release “Big Mess” (Atlantic Records) is anything but. A well constructed release with deeply witty lyrics and playful tunes. You can fully immerse yourself in the joyful thoughtfullness of their songs. Even though many of their lyrics espouse themes of insecurity and confusion, their music and production overshadow these darker images and leaves you with an optimistic feel. Grouplove is like Willy Wonka. Throw in as many ingredients as possible in the candy machine and out comes an everlasting gobstopper. The album opens with “Welcome To Your Life”, a big arena rocker full of twists and turns. Not sure if it’s a homage to band members Hannah Hooper and Christian Zucconi’s new baby girl or a warning to the world that their “Big Mess” is here to stay. Either way a rousing song showing the maturation of Grouplove. Thoughout the album the entwining of Hooper and Zucconi”s vocals excels. They seamlessly trade lyrics effortlessly. A perfect match of ying and yang. Every song on “Big Mess” stands alone and range from the feel good “Good Morning” to the melancholy “Spinning”. Throw in a variety of genres “Do You Love Me”, “Cannonball” and “Traumatized” (my daughters favorite track) and Grouplove has given everyone a golden ticket.
