Highly Suspect

Let my hard rock fly. When I owned Rogue Management a good portion of our artists were metal, hard rock, or punk (a.k.a Freaks, Requiem). We opened for major acts such as Soundgarden, Korn, and Biohazard. So artists like Highly Suspect are my secret addiction. Highly Suspect sound so much larger than their three-piece line up. The music is dark, loud and foreboding. The beat crawls into your blood and your body craves more. The band cuts its sound from likes of Hendrix and Nirvana and rivals todays Queen of the Stone Age and Kings of Leon. Born in the Cape Cod area and migrated to the hipster capital of the world “Brooklyn”  Highly Suspect have garnished a wealth of accolades. Two Grammy nominations and Sirius’ Octane “Discovery of the Year”. Quite impressive for a fairly young band. Highly Suspect’s first full length release is Mister Asylum (300 Entertainment). The album cranks. Johnny Stevens’ vocals and guitar are amazing. The texture of his voice is captivating. Brothers Rich and Ryan Meyer (bass and percussion) set a supercharged back beat. Strong and angst ridden Mister Asylum is a tremendous first effort. Every song hits you in the face with its power and personally intimate lyrics. You can feel the disturbed imagery that permeates throughout. These boys are no altar boys. Songs range from deteriorated and obsessed love, “Lost” and “Bloodfeather” to bouts of paranoia and suicide, “Bath Salts”. “Lydia”, their first single, sucks you in with its blues laden beat then sucker punches you in the gut on the chorus. But the most deeply disturbing song is “Mom”. A grueling diatribe about abandonment. Listening actually hurts. Mister Asylum is a totally complete essay on today”s youth lost. And Highly Suspect has given everyone a present. “My Name Is Human” a preview from their upcoming new release has been playing on Octane. As strong as anything on Mister Asylum I can’t wait for the whole package.
