SPOON

Spoon is in deep shit. Since the release of Telephono on Matador Records in 1996, this prolific Austin, Texas indie band is very adept at producing profanely creative albums and at the same time keeping themselves under the radar. Each of their subsequent records were poignant pieces of music but never were they labeled “the next big thing”. Always a musical presence but staying low-key, Spoon has been able the create the music they wanted.

That’s about to change. With the release of their newest album Hot Thoughts (Matador Records), Spoon has been thrust into the limelight. Building upon the foundation set by their previous record, They Want My Soul (Loma Vista/Republic), Spoon have broken out of their underdog shell.

Spoon has transformed themselves into rock’s wry funk/R&B hybrid. The title track “Hot Thoughts” finds Britt Daniel’s mesmerizing vocals added to an imaginative dance track with dynamite psychedelic guitar riffs. The electronic drumbeat in sync with Brian Eno’s drums is infective. With “Do I Have To Talk You Into It” Spoon starts with a slow crawl and ends with a full-blown funk romp. “Can I Sit Next To You” drags us back in time with a cool disco ambiance with imaginative keyboard interludes. Britt Daniel’s’ tonal inflections jive so well with the bands stellar groove. “First Caress” has a T-Rex feel with an amazing piano back beat and electronic surprises. “I Ain’t The One” returns Spoon to their minimalist roots with a soulful dirge of a song that transforms itself into a haunting lilt. “Tear It Down” is Spoon’s sneaky innuendo into today political climate. “Let them build a wall around us. I don’t care. I’m gonna tear it down”.

As strong as these songs are, the most punchy pieces are the two mainly instrumental tracks, “Pink Up” and album ending “Us”. “Pink Up” with its kaleidoscopic samba aura and “Us” with its brooding sax and inspired electronica transports us to worlds yet to be discovered. Britt Daniel and Jim Eno and the rest of the ensemble have created an explosive piece of art that will spirit them into the stratosphere.

Like I said, Spoon is in deep shit. They are the “next big thing”.
