AT THE SUN

I’m so glad that AMP has many friends both bloggers and music lovers. Because of one of these friends I was introduced to another great band. GlassboyBob is an amazing music enthusiast from across the pond who every morning and night usually leads off his tweets with a video or audio link of a band or artist he feels deserves a listens.

Just recently he tweeted a video for the song “Only a Fool” by the London based band, At The Sun. If you enjoy the Black Crowes and Rival Sons then At The Sun fits right in. At The Sun‘s music is bluesy, ballsy and raw. This five piece have just released their first album, Leave Before The Light.

The band consists of Harry Dale (Vocals), Alex Matthews (Bass), Chet Jogia (Lead Guitar), Craig Steen (Drums) and Kieron Heavens (Rhythm Guitar). According to founder Heavens “For us, it’s all about making music people can move to-music they can really feel. We don’t buy into the idea of just getting things out there quickly; we take our time to make sure everything we do is the best it can be.”

And the best it can be is exactly what At The Sun achieve on Leave Before The Light. The record is a tour de force. Every song is fiery and dynamic. Dale’s voice is impressive. His tone is perfect for the band’s raunchy temperament. The musicianship is glorious. The band attacks each tune with a manic desperation.

The first three songs on Leave Before The Light are powerhouses. The album opens with the aforementioned “Only a Fool” and your immediately hooked. The strumming guitar and drum intro just sucks you in and then Dale’s vocals totally enslaves you. “Preacher” follows and the fire grows stronger. By this time you know At The Sun is the real deal. “Breathe” just brings the intensity over the edge. The voltage is through the roof.

The bluesy and lecherous “Walk on Over” continues At The Sun‘s resounding assault. Next up is one of my favorites ,”Lay It on Me”. The combination of Dale’s expressive timbre and the band’s masterful instrumentation hits a home run. “Lifetime” slightly slows the pace but lyrically the song is a strong and poignant.

“Devil in Your Eye” brings back the juice. The sexy guitar riffs and and deep fried bass lines are colossal. Fuck, it doesn’t stop. “Bite Your Tongue”‘s killer bass has you sitting at the local pub doing shots and waiting for trouble. “Indestructible”, At The Sun‘s only ballad is an ideal vehicle for the band’s slower end.

At The Sun‘s last three songs are as strong as the first three. “Renegade” brings back the bluesy ambience and your loving it. “Soak It Up” revs up the verve. The kilowatts are flowing. Leave Before the Light ends with the stadium charged “Raise Your Glass”. It’s an impeccable finish to a crowning jewel of a record.

I raise my glass to At The Sun. I raise my glass to GlassboyBob for my induction to the temple of At The Sun. Hopefully I get a chance to catch these gents live.
