BENGT WASHBURN AND CORY MICHAELIS

Last night, March 1st, Anthony’s Ocean View in New Haven held its annual comedy night. We, my wife and I, have attended several of these shows at Anthony’s and always enjoyed ourselves. The talent is always first rate and the facility even though primarily a catering hall works well as a comedy venue. The food is excellent and the open bar is a plus. Also having most of our closest friends at the table makes the night special.

The two comedians on the bill were both quite talented.

Up first was Cory Michaelis, a comedian that flew in all the way from Seattle, Washington. His casual appearance with his Yale t-shirt and hoodie embodied a real frat boy look. His material was original and funny. Starting off with the trials and tribulations of his failed marraige he morphed into his main topic; the strange adventures of being a high school teacher. The routine flowed well and Michaelis delivery was spot on. His audience participation was perfect. His crowd banter was kept to a minimum and when he did engage it was funny and fit the bit. Michaelis was a perfect opener and a rising star.

The headliner, Bengt Washburn is a seasoned performer who has graced the stages of Comedy Central and Craig Ferguson. He started his set cracking jokes about his and his siblings unusual names. His Mormon upbringing was also an early topic. Everything was hilarious. As he went further into his routine his divorce, homelessness and second marriage was upfront. Each segment sequed easily and each piece was really funny. His best jokes were about his living in Germany and trying to learn the language. Washburn had the room in tears. Definately a talent to watch.

The night was  an enormous success. We left full, feeling no pain and totally entertained.
