SHARON ZAUBI

I didn’t know Sharon Zaubi very well. I met her several times as the bassist/vocalist for Funhouse. She played an awesome bass and her vocals and harmonies with the band were excellent but what really shone through while she was on stage was her incredible personality. You could feel the love she had for the music and it traveled easily across the room. She was always smiling and filling any space with joy. Not only was she an accomplished musician but also a competitive body builder. She took her training seriously and lived her life as healthy as possible. She also used her training to encourage teens and youths to use exercising as a tool for anti-bullying and better self esteem.

To the dismay of family, friends and the entire Ct. music community Sharon passed away this past April after a long and hard fought battle with cancer.

Sharon‘s family and friends held “a celebration of life” on September 8th at Nuzzo’s farm in Branford to pay homage to her spirit. She had given so much to the bands she played with and the people she loved that they wanted to show her how much they cared and missed this amazing person.

The weather blessed Sharon. It was a beautiful warm day. A perfect day to sit in the sunshine and listen to the five bands that Sharon played with.  The members of Funhouse, Total Hacks, Turbulence, Heavy Hitters and Mike and the Muffintops all played to honor her life and legacy. Her close friends Kristin Meneo and Heather Fucci-Legg organized a beautiful event that included raffles and food trucks but most of all made sure that everyone’s love of Sharon carried the day. Jason Heintz of Mike and the Muffintops was the official M.C. and made sure the day went smoothly. There was a host of volunteers to assist with parking and logistics. Everyone from the bands, organizers, volunteers and attendees all wanted the day to be ideal. They wanted to return some of the love Sharon gave everyone.

Band after band played wondrously. The music filled the farm with righteous melodies and glorious sounds. You could feel the devotion each musician had for Sharon. She had touched them all with her passion for music and her desire the make the world a better place.

The following are some memories and tributes from family, friends and band mates.

Chuck Beckman (Sharon‘s soul mate and life love): “She was the love of my life. There’s not a moment that goes by that she’s not in my heart. Every note I play is hers running through me. I see her everyday in the good actions of other people. I will carry her with me forever. Even though my feelings are unbearable, all the people here who loved Sharon and who Sharon loved are pulling me through”.

Kristin Meneo: “She was the most loving selfless soul. A wonderful woman all the way around. She was always concerned about others even during her darkest hours. She touched the lives of so many and for me personally, I am a better person for having had the chance to have her friendship. I love her and miss her everyday. The world is brighter for having her and darker for losing her.”

Heather Fucci-Legg: “She always had a kind word for everyone. She loved playing and really enjoyed life. She was a big part of the music community and will surely be missed. She was always laughing.”

Funhouse: “She was very talented. She worked at her craft all the time be it music, fitness, or jewelry. She was an amazing soul and awe-inspiring force. She always had a positive attitude. We will miss her.”

As I spoke to her family, friends and fellow musicians my admiration for Sharon Zaubi grew. Not because she was a skillful musician or a talented body builder but because of the imprint she left on everyone’s life. Everyone was a better person because of her. And everyone loved her. That is a mark of a titanic person. And Sharon Zaubi was titanic. One could almost hear her playing bass and smiling with all her friends on a beautiful summer day.

I would like to give a special shout out to Tony and Audra Nuzzo for the use of the farm. It was a perfect backdrop for Sharon‘s “Celebration”.
