FRIED DOUGH – ARTIST SPOTLIGHT & ALBUM REVIEW

 

Our friends from Toronto, Fried Dough will be releasing their new album, Mad Liquid Space, on June 2. We reviewed their first single off the record, “Bones” last April. Fried Dough describe themselves as an experimental electronic band who weave elements of trip hop, psychedelia, IDM and rock. The band consists of Aaron Gaistman, Andrew Cariboni and Nolan Bouvier.

Mad Liquid Space opens with “Who Is The Dreamer”. It’s a beautiful exercise creating an eerily moody soundscape that constantly fluctuates between dreamy ambient synths and psychedelic intonations. By adding a funky patch near the end of the song , Fried Dough add a bit of spice. The next tune, “First World Problems”, is one of the release’s highlights. Trip Hop vocals, spacey guitar and solid percussion assist in engaging the listener. “Beat Minor” continues Fried Dough’s exploration in building harmonic canopies. Their grooves and layered textures are utterly spectacular.

The previously reviewed “Bones” follows. As we stated last year, “Bones” envelops the listener in a trance like dream state that’s dually serene and edgy“. “Loop” is a quirky EDM tune that carries a transcendental beat. Fried Dough is subtlety messing with your head. “Loop” immerses you in a spectacular spectrum of divergent directions.  “Pushy” slows the pace and morphs into a Pink Floyd like mind fuck with a strong psychedelic vibe.

Fried Dough leaves the best for last. The nearly 10 minute opus, “Mad Liquid Space”, takes us on a sonic expedition of aural beauty. The passion and consciousness the band embed in the song is transcendental. The synths and trippy milieu flow with a sense of mystery and enlightenment. The spectral atmosphere and surreal vocals heighten the experience. With “Mad Liquid Space”, Fried Dough has constructed a masterpiece within their genre.

With the new release, Fried Dough has given a moment of enjoyment to a world gone mad. Mad Liquid Space captures our imagination and takes us on a fantastic sonic journey. In our last review of the band we said,  “If “Bones” is any indication of the flow then Mad Liquid Space is going to be spectacular”. We weren’t wrong. Many kudos to Fried Dough for a dazzling experiment.
