LADYBOWER – ARTIST SPOTLIGHT AND SINGLES REVIEW

Ladybower is a three piece unit based out of the U.K. whose sound is distinctly unique. The band has just released a series of singles that are both impressive and forcefully original. Ladybower is comprised of Jack Clinch (Bass), George Davis (Drums), Joe Gausden (Vocals/Guitar). Even though the band has only been together for about a year, they have captured the attention of fans and critics alike.

What separates Ladybower is their idiosyncratic blend of pop and indie sensibilities. They perfectly mesh the two genres to create something fresh. Their musicianship is outstanding and they convey a cool quirky perceptiveness. Also Gausden’s voice has an amazing singular quality to it.

Their influences seem quite varied. A little Bowie tossed with a Talking Heads/Brian Eno cocktail. Ladybower builds on these influences by adding their astute creativity to morph a crisp musical personality.  The band told AMP “We incorporate a range of influences in our music, channeling the energy and emotion that is the heart of our writing process, and our live performances“.  I asked what current artists the band is listening to and the list shows their diversity. Radiohead, Weval, the Voidz and Bea 1991 were just a few.

Last year Ladybower released a two song single. “Believe It” and “Roving Eye” are prime examples of the cohesiveness of the band. In “Believe It”  the band swirls the beat with sharp guitar riffs and energetic drumming from Davis. The tempo changes are adventurous and compelling. Gausden’s vocal inflections are fascinating. “Roving Eye” is indie heaven with a very Smiths like vibe. The hazy guitar matches the whole esoteric aura of the tune.

Earlier this year, Ladybower released the popish “Nature Finds a Way”. Again the progressions are intriguing. The imaginative keys are preeminent and works well with the easy gait of the song. Gausden’s vocals are outstanding and truly elevates the tune. “Nature Finds a Way” showcases the variance Ladybower has in their songwriting. Easily fitting into either the pop and indie spectrum, the song is the ideal hybrid.

The song may have an friendly feel but lyrically Ladybower uses their platform to explore quite important political issues. “Nature Finds a Way” opens with Gausden singing:

Take your pseudo-philosophical fight and shove it

Where those desperate enough to believe it can see it

You’d be lying to us and to yourself

To think all it takes to be good is to be happy

In May, Ladybower dropped their newest single, “You’re Too Easy on Yourself”. With “You’re To Easy on Yourself” the band continues on the road of solid songwriting and infectious rhythms. Davis’s percussion and Clinch’s bass lay down a steady back beat. The jangled guitar and Gausden’s vocals establish a brilliant combination. The tune is complexly simple. The hidden nuances paint an interesting soundscape.

Due to the pandemic, Ladybower is using this downtime to write new material. If the songs are anything like these four we are all in for a treat. Ladybower is definitely a group to watch when the normal world returns.
