LP – ARTIST SPOTLIGHT AND ALBUM REVIEW

N.Y. born, Los Angeles based LP leads a dual life. This successful songwriter has written songs for the likes of Christina Aguilera, and Rihanna just to name a few. It would be very easy for LP to stay in the studio and churn out hit after hit.

But there is another side of LP. She has been recording and performing music for over 15 years. Her success as a solo artist has been fraught with many up and downs. Even though she was signed to both Island Def Jam and Warner Bros. she couldn’t break through. It wasn’t until she landed a deal with Vagrant Records in 2015 that things began to take off. LP released her defining album, Lost On You, in December of 2016. Lost On You yielded several strong songs including the hits “Lost On You” and “Muddy Waters”.  The release fortified her position as an emerging star.

LP‘s followed with her second Vagrant record entitled Heart to Mouth in 2018. Again, the album advanced LP’s stature with a litany of solid tunes including “Girls Go Wild” and “Die For Your Love”. Throughout she was constantly touring the world and amassing accolades across Europe, Russia and the U.S.

COVID-19 has changed the landscape of the musical world. Like every artist, LP had to cancel her massive international headlining tour. So in lieu she decided to release a live album appropriately entitled Live In Moscow. Live In Moscow contains 17 original LP songs along side covers of Kings of Leon and the Rolling Stones. It was recorded at Crocus City Hall in Moscow in 2019 in front of a sold out crowd of 6000.

There are many highlights throughout Live In Moscow. “When We’re High” and “Girls Go Wild” are two of my favorites. The bluesy “Muddy Waters” catches LP‘s emotional intonations perfectly. The intensity of LP‘s vocals jump off the track. “Muddy Waters” is a powerhouse. “Lost On You” closes out the album. The song showcases LP‘s strong vocal range and her ability to emote. “Lost On You” also captures LP’s exciting stage persona and her ability to energize her fans.

I must make a confession. The shame of it is that until I received her press release I never heard any of LP‘s music. Her visibility seems stronger overseas, especially Europe. I can make an easy prediction. It’s only a matter of time till she blows up in the U.S.  Her songwriting and dynamic voice are glorious. As exemplified in “Live In Moscow”, her stage presence is outstanding. In short order LP will be a household name in the U.S. She has “superstar” written all over her. LP has absolutely transformed me into a new convert.
