LIMP BIZKIT – LIVE AT THE DOME IN THE OAKDALE
Thanks to my concert buddies Ed Mayzel and Mark Deloia, I was able to attend the amazing Limp Bizkit and Spiritbox show in the Dome at the Oakdale Theatre. The evening started with a excellent dinner at Archie Moore’s in Wallingford with discussions of prior concerts and amusing stories.
The Canadian outfit Spiritbox opened the show with a short but energetic six song set. Spiritbox has been getting major accolades as an up and coming metal entity. Lead singer Courtney Laplante’s vocals were both dynamic and strong. She has a propulsive metal scream and an extremely melodic voice and can slide from one to the other with ease. Mike Stringer’s guitar had a vibrant frenzy and Bill Crook’s bass was impressive. Touring member, Zev Rose on drums was memorable.
The band opened with the forceful “Holly Roller” and immediately captured the crowds attention. In fact, I was surprised how many people in the venue knew their songs and sang along. They continued with “Rule of Nines” and “Circle With Me”. Spiritbox even previewed a new song entitled “Hurt You”. They ended the night with their newest single, “Constance”. On a whole, Spiritbox delivered an elevated performance.
As soon as Limp Bizkit hit the stage, the throng was energized. They expected a ferocious show and Fred Durst and company didn’t disappoint. Limp Bizkit rolled out under the refrains of Prince’s “Purple Rain” and immediately went into “Take A Look Around”. The audience started jumping from the onset. From there the night was plainly glorious. After “Hot Dog”, Bizkit went into “Rollin’ (Air Raid Vehicle)”. The fans went ballistic and as expected the mosh pit was in full force.
Hit song after hit song rolled out. Limp Bizkit left no stone unturned. A cover of MInistry’s “Thieves” went over well and when they went into “My Generation”, the congregation went wild. The Dome was crazed. Everyone was in full fury. Mid set brought a DJ Lethal interlude which included “Party (Up In Here)’ by DMX, Insane In the Brain (Cypress Hill) and Walk (Pantera).
By this time, I am realizing how good Limp Bizkit really is, musically and performance wise. Fred Durst is the perfect front man. He has this incredible skill of reeling in an audience and keeping them in a state of delirium. Wes Borland’s guitar is sorely underrated. His bursts of frantic energy were astounding. His experimental guitar solo was nothing les than spectacular. Sam Rivers’ bass was boldly edgy. One thing that was constantly on my mind during the entire set was the drumming of John Otto. His percussions were booming and downright thunderous. He was one of the reasons the room was constantly frantic.
Back to the show. “Nookie” received a wild yell of approval. Fred Durst grabbed someone from the assemblage (Chanel) to duet “Full Nelson” with. After a homage to House Of Pain, “Jump Around”, Limp Bizkit closed the show with an audacious rendition of “Boiler”. The encore was just as brazen. “Heart Shape Box’ went into another Nirvana song, “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. The final two songs left the audience spent. “My Way” and “Break Stuff” were killer.
The entire evening was awesome. Limp Bizkit and Spiritbox gave the gathering a night to remember. As an aside, following this show, Limp Bizkit announced the cancelation of the remaining dates on the tour due to Covid concerns..
