NOX HOLLOWAY – ARTIST SPOTLIGHT & INTERVIEW

Nox Holloway

Alt/pop duo Nox Holloway have come out swinging with the release of a series of exotically romantic singles. The twosome have shrouded themselves in mystery by remaining anonymous but what we do know is their talent for writing melodic synth pop is amazing.

One half of Nox Holloway is comprised of a producer whose musical experience started by playing the drums. Eventually, his capabilities included 10 instruments including the keys and piano. The other half is a songwriter, lyricist and vocalist who is as likely to find inspiration strumming his ukulele as he is in the flow of hip hop by his idols. They found they had all the skills they needed to write the kind of songs that previously only existed in their imaginations. The name, Nox Holloway is a combination of the Latin word for “Night” and the street where they found inspiration.

In 2020, the duo dropped their first single, “Separate Ways”. The song is a dreamy combination of sublime arrangements and cool hip hop infused vocals, The low-key synth and smooth groove powers the song. This year, Nox Holloway followed with the audacious “Audrey” which a beautiful homage to the amazing Audrey Hepburn. It is a silky tune with emotive vocals and divine pop elements. It has an astonishing addictive beat that easily draws you in. In addition, the composition’s textures are gorgeously lofty. This July, The band will be releasing their next single, “Sapphire”. Again, Nox Holloway have created an mysterious aura with cinematic vocals and shimmering synth fills. The feel is adventurous with a longing for excitement. Also,  the duo is set to introduce their first EP in the near future.

Nox Holloway was kind enough to answer a few questions for AMP.

AMP: Your first two singles (“Separate Ways” & “Audrey”) are smoothly explosive. Is that what we can expect from the new album or EP?

NH: You can definitely expect the same defined colorful sound and feel, but we take pride in trying to avoid making the same song twice. The songs are meant to feel connected in the way they bring stories to life, but each one occupies its own unique world and aims to create a whole different experience, so you can know it’ll be a dense and exciting product but never knowing exactly what kind.

AMP: How does your song structure work?

NH: We tend to write songs from left to right as opposed to jumping around sections. So we’ll start with whatever feels like it should be the first thing you hear when you press play. I’ll usually look through my song ideas notes that I have been adding to for a few years now and see what strikes me that day or seems right for the feel of the track.

AMP: Lets continue. Explain the songwriting process?

NH: Our song process has actually changed and been refined a lot over the pandemic last year because we obviously had to work on everything remotely. We typically start with some kind of instrumental loop, take voice notes of some melody ideas, choose the ones we like most and then start to build the track from there. Production is mostly a vertical build with drums and any ornamental ideas, then deciding where we want to add or drop any of the sounds being used. We draw a lot of inspiration from movies, which is why our lyrics and production have a cinematic quality to them, so the concepts are usually meant to feel like an escape from real life as opposed to a direct representation of it.

AMP: Where did you draw the inspiration for “Audrey” from?

NH: The inspiration for “Audrey” actually came from a Breakfast at Tiffany’s poster I brought in London. I had never even seen the movie when I got it, but a friend I was with suggested it just because he thought it would look cool on my wall. A few months later I sat down in my room to write and just looked up at it in front of me and decided to use it as my muse for the day.. Since then, I’ve really immersed myself in her life and movies, and they’ve served as a constant source of inspiration.

AMP: Is the future bright for Nox Holloway?

NH: We sure hope so. It’s as hard as it’s ever been for your voice to cut through in such a saturated landscape, so we just keeping our heads down, making music we love, and hoping the world will love it too.
