ROBERT JON & THE WRECK – SHINE A LIGHT ON ME BROTHER

Robert Jon & the Wreck have released a pulsating new album full of blazing blues riffs, primal rockers and dramatic ballads. The full length entitled Shine A Light On Me Brother hammers the listener with groundbreaking swamp music and anthemic harmonies. The songwriting on the new record is sterling.. Each tune retains its own identity while still functioning as a cohesive unit with an ambitious mash of genres.

Even though the band originates from Orange County, Ca., their sound perfectly captures the soul of southern rock. Think Blacktop Mojo meets The Georgia Thunderbolts. Boogie jams, gospel choruses and wailing guitars are a dynamic trademark of Robert Jon & The Wreck. Formed in 2011, they have had several outstanding albums and have toured extensively with the likes of Black Stone Cherry, Buddy Guy and Rival Sons to name a few. With the new record, the band, comprised of Robert Jon Burrison (Lead Vocals/Guitar), Andrew Espantman (Drums/Vocals), Steve Maggiora (Keys/Vocals), Warren Murrel (Bass) and Henry James (Lead Guitar) have created a sonic jewel. A tornado of whiskey drinking, fun loving and foot stomping aural beauty.

Just listen to the first two songs off Shine A Light On Me Brother. The album opens with “Shine A Light On Me Brother”. It’s a fast paced banger with a ferocious beat and driving vocals. The guitars roar and the backbeat of Espantman and Murrel is propulsive. Raise your hands folks, we are about to witness to the lord!

“Everyday” is a honky- tonk laid back funfest. In addition, the backing vocals are boldly rich Just imagine good booze, good friends and groove laden music. Let the party begin. Speaking about the tune, Burrison explains: “Everybody” is an all-out good time jam track that was born out of frustration due to the lack of freedom that we had grown used to pre-pandemic and were subsequently denied during lockdown“.

The other eight songs are just as impressive. “Chicago” is melodic and soulful. Burrison’s vocals are smooth and blues infused and the jazzy arrangements feel right. The sensitive “Hurricane” is texturally sublime with its melancholy keys and sorrowful guitar. “Desert Sun” brings back the southern sensitivities. Another tune where Burrison’s voice carries the day. His singing is full of passion and remorse. Again, Maggiora’s piano and James’ guitar add the perfect touch..

Robert Jon & The Wreck finish off with two more imposing tracks. “Brother” has a soulful gospel feel with an impassioned flair. “Radio” jams out with an exuberant up tempo swing that has everyone ready to hit the dance floor. The band just lets it all spill out. A great finish to a well constructed treasure.
