Staind and Korn were originally scheduled for a summer Friday night. Myself and five friends were set to attend, Covid struck Korn lead singer Jonathan Davis and the show was postponed to October. My crew of six dwindled down to maybe me. We all had other plans for the new date. I knew from a save the date card that my good friends Pat and Sandi were getting married that day but didn’t know the time yet. I hung onto my ticket hoping for an early wedding. The concert gods cooperated and the wedding was at 11am. I got to celebrate with the happy couple and then head to the Xfinity Theatre to see the show.

To be honest Staind was the main draw for me and the people I was originally going with. The group is from Springfield, MA. and always draws a good crowd around here. Staind led off with “Eyes Wide Open” followed by “Open Your Eyes”. Lead singer Aaron Lewis’s voice was strong. The band next played “Not Again”, “Fade” and “Right Here”. Guitarist Mike Mushok played with power the whole night, head banging with his long rock star hair. “Crawl”, “Outside”, and “Paper Wings” were next followed by “So Far Away” Bassist Johnny April and drummer Sal Giancarelli kept the beat going and the crowd was happily singing along. The band ended their set with “For You”, “It’s Been Awhile” and “Mudshovel”. Lewis was in a good mood tonight. He didn’t tell anyone in the crowd to fuck off. I’m guessing the short set kept the Jack Daniels from taking effect but he was drinking liberally.

I have been to Staind/Korn shows before and usually a lot of the crowd heads out before Korn comes on. Not tonight, people are looking for more live music after the last year of no live music. Korn came out strong with “Insane” and “Falling Away from Me”. Lead singer Jonathan Davis seemed recovered from his bout with covid as his vocals sounded spot on. “Here to Stay” was next followed by “Victimized”, “Cold” and “Dirty”. Davis next came out with the bagpipes to lead into “Shoots and Ladders” and Metallica’s “One” was played as an outro. “Clown” was followed by a band jam, James “Munky” Shaffer(Guitar), Brian “Head” Welch (Guitar), Reginald “Fieldy” Arizu (Bass) and Ray Luzier (Drums) showed off their chops leading into “You’ll Never Find Me”. “Coming Undone” and “Can You Hear Me”. “Freak on a Leash” closed out the main set. Now more of the crowd filed out before the encore. I never understood the “beat the traffic people”. Enjoy the show, Commit. Korn retuned for “It’s On!/Trash/Did My Time”, “Twist”, “A.D.I.D.A.S.” and “Blind”.

’68, a punk duo from Atlanta, opened the show. They were surprisingly good and worth a listen if you please. Guitarist and vocalist Josh Scogin was very entertaining with his crowd banter throughout their set. He was joined on drums by Nikko Yamada.
