SUGAR HOLLOW – DANBURY’S NEW MUSIC VENUE

Sugar Hollow is going to be Danbury, Ct.’s newest music venue. I recently met co-owners John Conner and Brian Teagarden at Sugar Hollow to discuss their reasons into delving into the manic world of club ownership and music promotion.

Even though, the remodeling was still in progress, Sugar Hollow was impressive. John and Brian have put countless hours into creating a space with just the right ambiance for both the artist and audience. Since they are also musicians, they understand the ideal environment conducive to having a grand night and an awesome live performance. They hope to be the catalysts for that perfect bond where the artist and listener can find that ever elusive quintessential musical connection.

John Conner was kind enough to answer a few questions about Sugar Hollow for the AMP readers.

AMP: You’re both musicians. What was your impetus to open Sugar Hollow?

JOHN: The driving force behind this endeavor was to create a space for
musicians by musicians. Since we both play in the area and because their
are no venues in this area similar to Sugar Hollow, as it is a step up
from the local restaurants and breweries where most bands play,  we have
decided to create a space where the focus is on the music that has a
capacity larger then most places in the area so bands can really shine.
We have spent considerable focus on the quality of the sound in the
venue and the layout in order to optimize the experience. We are
creating a space that we hope musicians will love to play and also love
to come and see quality music.

AMP: Do you feel your music background gives you an edge in running a music
venue and bar?

JOHN: Since neither of us have done this before, only in the aspect of that
we know how bands deserve to be treated and we know how to create a
space where musicians will be comfortable and feel free to express
themselves with quality equipment and professional sound. In addition,
we created a space where the music fans will have a 270 degree view of
the band in an intimate but fairly large setting.

AMP: What will differentiate Sugar Hollow from other night spots?

JOHN: The most important is that it is unique to the area in terms of style,
size, design and most importantly feel. It’s a place for local bands to
take a step up from where they typically play which does not exist in
the Danbury/Ridgefield area. We have a large lounge with leather
couches, we will be allowing local artist to display their art on our
walls, we will be serving a variety of local craft beers to support the
community and the owners may just get up and jam at any given time. We
are hoping to create a community of people where good vibes and good
music are the common thread.

AMP: Will there be any particular genre of music featured at the club?

JOHN: The short answer is NO! The focus will be on the quality of the music
as opposed to the genre. I believe most people like multiple genres of
music, the key is that it is live and performed well.

AMP: How many nights are you planning to have live performances and are
there other types of entertainment such as comedy planned.

JOHN: As of now we are planning on opening Tuesday – Saturday.  Tuesday
will be a singer song writer night run by a local singer that is
entrenched in the community.  It very well may have one Tuesday out of
each month dedicated to comedy but that is slightly up in the air at the
moment. Wednesdays will be an open jam run by a John Chapman, a well
established local musician, so new and old talent can be showcased and
musicians can hopefully meet fellow musicians for networking and
collaborating. The first Thursday of each month will be a blues and jazz
jam run by another well established local musician with a full house
band and guest musicians. The remaining Thursdays will consist of live
music. Every Fridays and Saturday will be bands. In addition, we will be
doing a pride night once a month as their is a need for this in this
community and the idea has been very well received and appreciated.

AMP: What was the ultimate objective of Sugar Hollow

JOHN: I pretty much answered this above, but once again I can’t stress enough
that we are striving to create a venue with quality music and sound,
good vibes and a personable and engaging staff in a large but intimate
setting. We are planning on implementing a full kitchen over the next
few months, but as for now, we will have food trucks and delivery from
Brick House pizza which has a full menu and is less then a mile away.

AMP: When is the opening planned for?

JOHN: We are hopeful it will be the first week in October?

AMP: Who will be handling the bookings for Sugar Hollow?

JOHN: At present it will be myself, John Conner, and my partner Brian
Teagarden. We can be reached through our Facebook page, Facebook
messenger, Instagram, our website which is currently being developed,
and of course by calling the venue.

AMP: Have the local authorities been warm to your ambitions?

JOHN: Absolutely!  We are overwhelmed by all the support and encouragement we
have received. In addition to the local authorities, the support from
the music community and music fans alike has been more then we could
have ever imagined. We feel grateful that our vision has been so well
received.
