New Jersey upstarts, Dogs In A Pile played The Space Ballroom last week (Jan, 22nd) with One Time Weekend in support. The club was packed with fans of both artists ready to enjoy a night of rapturous music.

This is the second instance we have caught One Time Weekend in a backing role at the venue. We saw them opening for Artikal Sound System and Bumpin Uglies this past July (see link below in Related). One Time Weekend was impressive then and even more so this time around. The band consists of Adam Eytan (Guitar/ Vocals), Ian D’Arcangelo (Lead Vocals/Bass), Zac Mulcahy (Guitar/Keyboard) and Ben Sullivan (Drums).Their musical accents effortlessly blends fragments of jam, blues, funk, reggae and a whole hodgepodge of other genres. One Time Weekend’s music is full of monumental aural barrages that easily manages to totally enthrall their audiences.

One Time Weekend’s nine song set was loaded with supersized grooves and atomic riffs. They performed ferocious renditions of “Dongo Bongo!”, “Circles Around The Sun” and “Dr. Funk”. Their musicianship abounded with brazen dexterity and confidence. D’Arcangelo’s vocals carried a melodic intensity with an aggressive edge. The harmonies were vigorously sublime. A major highlight was their cover of King Harvest’s, “Dancing In The Moonlight”. As an added treat, Jeremy Kaplan from Dogs In A Pile joined them on keyboards.. Throughout the evening, the entire crowd was immersed in One Time Weekend’s sonic vibrations. Everyone was flowing with the ensemble’s intoxicating performance. One Time Weekend is a band with a huge future.

Dogs In A Pile is a five piece troupe composed of excellent musicians from the New Jersey/Long Island area. The members are students at the University of the Arts Philadelphia and the Berklee College of Music. Dogs In A Pile is comprised of Jimmy Law (Guitar/ Vocals), Brian Murray (Guitar Vocals), Jeremy Kaplan (Keys/Vocals), Sam Lucid (Bass/Vocals) and Joe Babick (Drums). Their sound is a convergence of many different styles ranging from psychedelia, improv, jazz, jam to everything in between. The Grateful Dead, Frank Zappa and Phish can be seen as major influences. Dogs In A Pile released their debut album entitled Not Your Average Beagle last year.

They opened the pageantry with the ambitious “Can’t Wait For Tonight” which set a heavenly tone for the eve. The song enveloped the gathering in a vibrant and transcendent embrace. Their glorious rhythms cascaded throughout the venue. Law and Murray’s guitars layered eruptions of dazzling licks. Kaplan’s keys shimmered with a divine keenness. Lucid delivered a imposing bass line while Babick’s drums were profoundly forceful.

Dogs In A Pile then segued through a nine song funfest. Their constant chord changes and deconstruction of musical genres were phenomenal. The audience was in a continuous state of rapture as the notes past through their elated souls. Highlights included the incandescent “Bubble”, “Blues for Brian” and “Bent Strange”. The band’s free-flowing musical attack created a kaleidoscope of sonic beauty.

It was a truly enlightening evening of memorable music with two bands that completely complimented each other.
