JAWBREAKER – WORRIERS – THE GET UP KIDS
My son Jagger invited me to this show along with 2 friends from his college days in Boston who were big Jawbreaker fans. I’m always up for a show and tonight would be 3 bands i hadn’t seen live, a real rarity these days.
Jawbreaker was the clear star of the show and the volume when they hit the stage rose ten fold, both through the amps and the crowd. “Boxcar” led off the set followed by “I Love You So Much It’s Killing Us Both”. At this point I finally figured out what looked different to me. Vocalist and lead guitar player Blake Schwarzenbach is a lefty. His vocals were impressive throughout the night. The band had previously stopped playing in 1996 due to him having throat polyp issues. The band has been back playing since 2017. “Save Your Generation” was followed by Schwarzenbach talking about how at least everyone agreed they all hate Jawbreaker.
He also had a lot of fun with the Boston crowd saying they were all moving to become longshoremen. “Jinx Removing”, “Chemistry”, “Fireman”,and “Condition Oakland” led into “Jet Black” where the first mass use of phones taking video appeared. Even the headbangers in the front row and the circle pit stopped to video. Bass player Chris Bauermeister played a thundering 4 string and also had the distinction of being the first band member wearing a mask during the performance I have seen since shows came back. “Million” and “Oyster” got the crowd amped for “Bad Scene, “Everyone’s Fault” where the circle pit got bigger and the floor had fists pounding the air.
”Sluttering (May 4)” was my favorite of the night. “Basilica” and “Kiss the Bottle” ended the main set. A 3 song encore, “Chesterfield King”,”Unlisted Track” and “Accident Prone” ended the night with the finale bringing out the onslaught of phones again. Jawbreaker also includes Adam Pfahler on drums. He was a steady backbeat throughout the night. As Schwarzenbach said at one point, if they only followed their own advice they would have figured out this whole music thing a while ago. Now he said the band is the best its ever been, and for this night of live music I would have to agree.
Worriers opened the night. Some highlights of their set for me was the bass on “PWR CPLE” from Nick Psillas. I also enjoyed “Future Me” and “End The World”. Lauren Denitzio (Vocals, Rhythm Guitar) had a very soothing, melodic voice. Mikey Erg (Drums) and Frank Piegaro (Lead guitar) round out the group.
The Get Up Kids was the middle act. Matt Pryor (Vocals, Rhythm Guitar) noticed the circle pit starting during “I’m a Loner Dottie, a Rebel” and said it was the first one they had seen since March 13, 2020. Lead guitarist Jim Suptic took vocals for “Better This Way” and “Rememberable” and I actually enjoyed his voice more. Another highlight of the set was “Holiday” where almost everyone in the crowd was singing along.
