LIVE @ THE PREMIER THEATER AT FOXWOODS
Live played the Premier Theater at Foxwoods the weekend before Thanksgiving and it was a show I was thankful to be seeing.
Lead singer Ed Kowalczyk (Rhythm Guitar) is the only original member left in the band but it is his voice and stage presence that brings Live to life. If you didn’t know he was the star of the show you would after a couple songs as beside his performance he was in the spotlight continuously while the rest of the band played in the shadows.
Speaking of lights as the show started with “Hold Me Up” the rear stage lights were positioned directly in my eyes. I was hoping this would be short lived and thankfully by song number two, “All Over You” an adjustment was made and the problem for my sight line was not an issue the rest of the night. Before “Freaks” Kowalczyk said it was great to be back after the pandemic and he was taking us back to 1997.
“Selling the Drama” was followed by “The Dolphins Cry” where bassist Chris Herein shined throughout and Kowalczyk was up on the drum riser dancing. Next came the first song Kowalczyk ever wrote when he was 19, “Pain Lies on the Riverside”. “Run to the Water” and “Brothers Unaware”, another song written at 19 were next.
Robin Diaz had a quick drum solo leading into “Stage” which also featured a quick guitar solo from Zak Loy.”Shit Towne” led into a rap about people fighting the past few years so lets start a love fest at Foxwoods with some singing. The crowd obliged during “Mother Earth Is a Vicious Crowd”. “Turn My Head”, “They Stood Up for Love”, and “ White, Discussion” closed out the main set.
For the encore’s first song “Overcome”, Kowalczyk was accompanied only with touring keyboardist Justin Weisman on stage. Before “Heaven” Kowalczyk said teachers are the most important people on Earth. I would have to agree since that is my day job. He then brought 3 of his children on stage. The crowd was reminded to go wild for “Lankini’s Juice” as it was Saturday night so no school tomorrow.
Band introductions during “I Alone” were one of the few times the band saw a spotlight. “Lightning Crashes” closed out the night and a satisfied crowd filed out onto the casino floor to see if their great night would continue.
