MUSICIANS RALLY FOR REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS ON 9/22

New Haven-area musicians will come together on September 22 for the inaugural Connecticut Voices for Choices (CT VFC) concert at The Beeracks, with the hopes of raising much-needed funds for abortion-rights organizations.

The CT VFC event, put together by local musicians Marisa Torrieri Bloom, Kate Mirabella and Grace Yukich, comes in response to the Supreme Court’s decision on June 24, 2022, to nix the legal precedent that established the constitutional right to abortion in every state. Featured performers include:

• Singer/songwriter Vicki F.
• Indie rock duo Passing Strange
• Singer/songwriter Sarah Golley
• Femme punk trio Corpse Flower
• Hard rock/punk quartet Trashing Violet
• Synth pop dynamo Falconeer
• Singer/songwriter Ponybird

Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door (purchase them here), and proceeds will benefit Planned Parenthood of Southern New England and the National Black Women’s Reproductive Justice Agenda.

“We knew the best way we personally could inspire others to come together for the common good —raising critically needed funds that could, for example, help women come to Connecticut to obtain an abortion — was through music,” said event organizer Marisa Torrieri Bloom, lead singer of the band Trashing Violet and editor of Rockmommy, an event co-sponsor.

“Our social networks and skills lend themselves best to participating in the long tradition of fighting injustice using the arts—through songwriting and through bringing people together to express sadness and frustration through music,” CT Voices for Choices cofounder Kate Mirabella, frontwoman in the indie rock duo Passing Strange, added.

“The music community in Southern Connecticut is a caring and tight-knit group of people,” says CT Voice for Choices cofounder Grace Yukich, frontwoman in the femme punk band Corpse Flower. “We knew people wanted to do something after the Dobbs decision, and we’re thrilled to provide this opportunity for community members to join the fight to keep abortion accessible and safe for all Americans who need it. What’s punk for anyway, if not to fight injustice?”
