queen mars – AN INTIMATE DISCUSSION AND ALBUM REVIEW

queen mars is a rising star. She is a talented singer-songwriter whose smash debut EP, trust issues, vaulted her deep into the musical stratosphere. Her sound is both sensual and intimate yet it still conveys a potent intensity. It is truly hard to categorize her music. She easily blends pop with r&b, soul, and rock in order to create a singular rhythm. And that rhythm is majestic. Her unique voice carries a special quality of freshness and vitality. queen mars delivers a primal punch of lush aural textures.

queen mars just released her debut full length entitled lucid truths and fever dreams. The concept for the album is decidedly distinctive. It embodies 13 one minute tracks that mirrors her birth chart. Each tune explores a different astrological sign highlighting their planetary placement and their effects on the human psyche. The flavors of each song are totally individual. The tracks are brazen jewels of beauty. From opening tune, “sun in aries” till closer, “saturn in aries”, the entire record resounds with explosive beats and exotic grooves. It’s such an impressive project and one that deserves praise and attention.

queen mars graciously sat down with AMP for an intimate discussion about her career, new album and the future.

AMP: What made you want to become a musician?

queen: I grew up loving music and poetry. When I was 8 years old, I made a proclamation to my family that I was going to be a singer. At that time I thought that pop musicians wrote their own music. So, if I was going to be a singer, I had to write my own material. That 8 year old girl immediately started writing songs. I continued from there and I found it very therapeutic. It was a good way to express my emotions. I began writing almost every day and it just continued into adulthood.

AMP: Describe your creative process when writing new music?

queen: Honestly, it changes all the time. When I first started writing, I would write everything on piano. Just get the chord progressions down with the lyrics and melodies. Then I would hit up a producer to built the actual track around it. More recently, I’ve been a little more experimental in how I create.

I’ve also starting producing. I produced the new project myself including all the demos. Then I brought it to a producer to change out some sounds. Currently, I’ve been building beats first, then writing the song. It all depends on my mood and what comes first. If I have a lyric first, I’ll probably do a chord progression on the piano. But if I’m in the studio writing beats, I’ll build the song off that beat.

AMP: Are there any artists who inspire you?

queen: Yeah. I’m heavily inspired by artists like Lana Del Rey and BANKS. Also, even though I don’t make music like her, I have this obsession with Beyonce. Several 2000 r&b artists like Alicia Keys and Usher inspired me as well.

AMP: Where did the concept for your new album, lucid truths and fever dreams, come from?

queen: It really was just a random idea. I was in need of a new project I could throw myself into. So, I thought it would be cool to make a project based on my birth chart. I started making demos fairly quickly. Originally I was going to release these unfinished demos online in 2020. I’m glad I sat on them for awhile and extended the creative process. They wouldn’t have been ready. I’m happy I gave them time to breathe. The extra time helped me build out the production and make sure it was a cohesive endeavor.

AMP: You have defined your music “kaleidoscope pop”. Can you expound on that?

queen: A lot of my production in general is experimental in nature. The entire process is me trying to establish a palette of rich colors to my music. When it comes to sound, I don’t want to be confined to one lane. For me, my music has to flow and change like the colors in a kaleidoscope. I also feel like the lyrics are my structural foundations. The music embellishes color to those foundations.

AMP: If you could collaborate with any artist who would it be?

queen: I would love to collaborate with Doja Cat. I’m a big fan of hers. Another artist I would truly love to work with is Glass Animals. I think Dave Bayley is a really cool musician and writer. The sounds he creates with his band are really interesting. There are many more but those are my top two.

AMP: As a female in the music industry, do you feel there is extra pressure in terms of image? Do you feel that things have changed for women in the business?

queen: I do believe there is added pressure on women in the music industry concerning their image. A lot more is expected of us on how we present ourselves. It takes more time and effort. A guy can roll out of bed and just jump on stage and get away with it. Women don’t have that luxury. Like i said, more is expected. I do believe it’s been a little better. We are starting to release some of that pressure but we are still not on equal footing.

AMP: Are there any plans for tour dates in support of the new album?

queen: I’m still working on the new album’s promotion. It will probably fill out the rest of my year. But, there will be some live shows promoting this project and new music that I have been working on waiting for the record to drop. I have more material coming out that truly represents me as an artist.

AMP: What’s the future like for queen mars?

queen: A lot more music for sure. A lot more visuals as well. I’ve been working on music nonstop. I’m very excited. I feel I have found my sound. Now that I’m also producing myself, I feel I have more control over the musical palette I want to create. There are so many more experiences I want to write about.
