SALIVA – A COOL CONVERSATION WITH BOBBY AMARU

Saliva has been a staple on the nu-metal scene for over twenty years. Founded in 1996, the band has delivered such hits as “Click Click Boom”, “Always” and “Ladies And Gentlemen”. Lead vocalist Bobby Amaru talks with AMP while on the road near Roswell, New Mexico.

Besides Amaru, Saliva is comprised of Wayne Swinny (Lead Guitar/Backing Vocals), Paul Crosby (Drums) and Brad Stewart (Bass). The group just released their newest single entitled “Crows” mined from their forthcoming studio album.

“Crows” is a mesmerizing track that features Amaru’s edgy vocals surrounded by a dark and menacing kaleidoscope of sonic beauty. Saliva is constantly evolving and creating music that, while true to their roots, always brings something new.

AMP: Saliva has had a long and successful run. How does the band constantly sound fresh and current?

BOBBY: It’s not something we plan. It just comes organically. We always seem to create next level music. We don’t try to stray to far away from our roots. This way we stay true to our core fans but we are a rock and roll band. We like to keep everyone on their toes.

AMP: Your new single, “Crows”, is hard hitting yet at the same time quite melodic. Is that the direction the band is looking for?

BOBBY: There are other songs on the new record that also fits that vibe. We don’t intentionally write the songs that way. It just comes out with that feel. There are other songs that are completely different. The reaction to “Crows” has been great. We are stoked about it.

AMP: It’s been a while since the last Saliva album. When can your fans expect the next one?

BOBBY: Hopefully late fall. I say that because originally it was supposed to been released early fall but there’s still work to be done. We want it to be as perfect as possible.

AMP: Saliva is a road friendly band. What tour stop was your most memorable and which would you like to forget?

BOBBY: There have been a ton of memorable ones. The international dates are always fun. We really enjoy military shows because we actually do some cool missions with the troops. They are also the most humbling. Our soldiers are amazing. One I would like to forget! There are several of those but we will keep those to ourselves.

AMP: Staying on the touring aspect, which young band would you love for support and why?

BOBBY: Oh crap! I’m so out of the loop. We do try to help bands. There’s a band from Minneapolis called 9th Planet. They’re a bunch of young kids who really rock. We took them on the road for quite a few dates. Another band that is up and coming is Cultus Black. We get hit up a lot by young bands and we definitely try to help out.

AMP: What first got you into music?

BOBBY: Dad! My parents were into music. My grandfather was a lounge singer. It’s kind of a musical family. So, I was born that way.

AMP: What is the one thing you want your fans to take away from your songs?

BOBBY: Just to know that we are truly honest with our lyrics. We don’t write cookie cutter bullshit! It’s all from the heart.

AMP: What is your favorite activity when you are not in the studio or not on tour?

BOBBY: Man! I got kids. So that’s what I do when I’m not making music. Homework. Learning sixth and ninth grade math all over again! I don’t remember any of that shit from when I was in school. I have high regards for teachers. Especially during the pandemic when the parents had to help. It drove me fucking crazy trying to figure it out. I don’t know how teachers do it. They deserve to make double, no triple, what they are making now.

AMP: When was the last time you were starstruck and who was it?

BOBBY: I’ve only been starstruck a couple of times. One of the times was Tommy Iommi. I was 18 and we were recording an album. Our producer had to take a break to pick up Tommy. The only way we were going to let that happen is if we tagged along.

So, me and another band member met him in the studio. He was standing there with his guitar. It was like we were in a movie. He was the nicest guy on the planet. Iommi even let us listen to his tracks. Here was the man who practically invented metal. It was pretty cool. Another time was when I met Liam Gallagher. My friend Matt Pinfield introduced us. I’m a big Oasis fan.

AMP: What’s next for Saliva?

BOBBY: We’re still touring. Still got a bunch of dates. New music coming out. The “Crows” video just got released. We are psyched about that. We will have some exciting updates coming in the very near future.
