BEYOND FRONTIERS – LIVE AT THE CHANCE THEATER

It’s the holiday season and crazy busy. On December 29, 2022, a Thursday night and I flew to The Chance in Poughkeepsie, NY to see Joey Belladonna perform with his Journey cover band, Beyond Frontiers and boy am I glad I went. I missed the first song but caught the rest and what an outstanding show it was. To me it was obvious that he loves singing Journey and he did a phenomenal job.

A bit about Joey Belladonna, he is the singer for Anthrax which has been around since 1981 and is
considered one of the Big 4 along with Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer. Anthrax was one of the
first thrash metal bands to emerge from the east coast. Joey is also the vocalist and drummer of the
cover band Chief Big Way. Belladonna has six Grammy Award nominations and he is known for his tenor
vocal range as well as his energetic stage presence.

He is also the vocalist for Beyond Frontiers. He scheduled 3 East Coast dates in December of 2022. Dec. 28- Palladium, Worchester, Mass, December 29 at The Chance in Poughkeepsie, NY and December 30 at Wally’s in Hampton Beach, NH.

Beyond Frontiers also consists of Doug Carter on keyboards, Paul Arntz on bass, Matt Basford on guitar
and Justin Ward on drums. Belladonna’s reason for doing this band is that he has loved the songs, it’s fun music, and it’s a cool challenge. Its just about the music, nothing more. He does not care about all the lookalike stuff. In addition, he states that he does not do the music note for note. Sometimes he just likes to do his own thing versus perfect renditions, and just likes to make it cool.

Back to The Chance, it was a really good crowd for a Thursday night during holiday season. As always the staff at the Chance was wonderful and again an amazing show. The band opened up with “Separate Ways”, then “I’ll Be Alright Without You”, followed by “Girl Can’t Help It”, then “Who’s Cryin Now”. Just wow! Belladonna sings with such passion and enthusiasm for Journey. He works the stage well and makes a lot of eye contact with audience members and people are thrilled to be sung to by him. It was such a fun night and so great to hear all of Journeys greatest hits.

The show ended with “Faithfully” which was the perfect song to end such a fabulous night. I almost did not make it to the show and I am so glad I flew to NY state to catch it. When they tour again be sure to catch this show it is a definite winner in my book!
