ANDREW McMAHON IN THE WILDERNESS – ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

Andrew McMahon is an amazing talent. His multiple musical endeavors have created adventurous music and brazen soundscapes. His current venture is the shimmering Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness. He also is the driving force behind the group Something Corporate and solo project Jack’s Mannequin. Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness is scheduled to play College Street Music Hall in New Haven on Tuesday, 11/28. McMahon is bringing the fabulous Michigander and Wildermiss for support.

McMahon started Something Corporate in 1998. Formed with high school friends, the band dropped three albums, Ready…Break (2000), Leaving Through the Window (2002) and North (2003). The last two were released via Geffen Records. The group is encompassed by McMahon (Lead Vocals/Piano), Josh Partington (Lead Guitar/Backing Vocals) Kevin “Clutch” Page (Bass), Brian Ireland (Drums/Percussion) and Bobby “Raw” Anderson (Rhythm Guitar). Something Corporate disbanded in 2006 but reunite for special celebration concerts and select festivals.

From there, McMahon started a solo project under the moniker of Jack’s Mannequin. The first full length was Everything In Transit on Maverick records. The Glass Passenger and People and Things followed, both on Sire records. Jack’s Mannequin’s sound was slightly poppier with richer textures than Something Corporate which incorporated a lot of edgy punk angst.

Andrew‘s current enterprise is another extended solo project. Under the guise of Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness, he has delivered some of his most impressive work to date. His first self titled record featured his huge hit, “Cecilia And The Satellite”. The song is groove laden tour de force with lush arrangements and passionate vocals. McMahon wrote it as homage to his newborn daughter. Zombies on Broadway was released in 2017 and was highlighted by another big tune, “Fire Escape”. AMITW‘s next release was Upside Down Flowers (2018) with “Ohio” being the first single. “Ohio” is accentuated by a lush essense and emotive vocals. McMahon‘s latest album is the sublime Tilt at the Wind No More (2023).

McMahon has also delved into other artistic territories. He has written numerous songs for other artists including Lindsey Stirling. In addition, he wrote a book entitled Three Pianos: A Memoir published by Princeton Architectural Press. On a personal note, McMahon was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in 2005. Since it was caught early, his prognosis was bright. Afterwards, he created the non-profit charity, The Dear Jack Foundation, to raise funds for cancer research. To date the foundation has raised over a half a million dollars.

Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness‘ tour stop at College Street will be memorable. He a consummate performer and his music resonates deeply with his devoted fans. Plus, the current lineup of the band is incredible. It will be a night to remember. Also, McMahon has scheduled a couple reunion dates for Something Corporate. They will be playing shows on Dec. 30th and Dec. 31th at the City National Grove of Anaheim. Those should not be missed.
