GET THE LED OUT – LIVE – COLLEGE STREET MUSIC HALL
Get the Led Out is an amazing Led Zeppelin tribute band who on April 13th played two dynamic sets at College Street Music Hall in New Haven. The night started with dinner and drinks. Scott Steinberg, our illustrious IT manager and writer, his wife Eva, our friend Carlos, my wife Jenn and myself met at Bar. After a great dinner and a few cocktails, off we went to see the show. Jenn and I, and I believe Carlos, had seen Get the Led Out before. This would be Scott and Eva’s virgin performance.
GTLO is one of the premier Zeppelin cover bands. They perfectly capture their music and feel to a tee. The group is composed of Paul Sinclair (Lead Vocals/Harmonica), Paul Hammond (Guitars), Tommy Zamp (Guitars/Vocals), Phil D’Agostino (Bass/Vocals), Derek Smith (Drums – Adam Ferraioli is currently in rehab with a shoulder injury) and Eddie Kurek (Keys/Guitar/Vocals/Percussions). The band uses six musicians in order to capture all Zep’s overdubs and exotic arrangements and bring the music closer to the original recorded sound.
Get the Led Out came out with a splash. “Immigrant Song” immediately set the bar for the entire evening. Sinclair’s vocals were spot on and the musicianship was amazing. The dual guitars of Hammond and Zamp were killer. D’Agostino’s bass carried an amazing backbeat while Smith’s drums slammed with tenacity. Kurek’s extra vocal overlay added a spectacular touch. And this was only the first song. “Good Times Bad Times”, “Custard Pie” and “The Ocean” followed. The crowd at College Street was enjoying every moment as the heavenly music swirled throughout the venue.
The band not only delivers a sensational experience but their visuals are also great. Zamp was all over the stage and Hammond’s guitar styling was ferocious. Kurek filled the voids on keys and a third guitar and his vocals were masterful. Smith was a madman on the drums. He definitely creates an intrepid flavor for Bonham’s percussion essence. Next up was “No Quarter”, “Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You” (a personal favorite) and “Ramble On”. Once again, a good portion of the audience were on their feet, singing along. GTLO finished off their first set with extraordinary renditions of “Dazed and Confused”, “Going to California”, “Tangerine” and “The Rain Song”.
After a short intermission, Get the Led Out returned with more fire. “Night Flight”, “Moby Dick” and “Thank You” started the ball rolling. Smith’s extended drum solo during “Moby Dick” was incredible. He showed a ruthless ability to capture the house with his incendiary eruptions. College Street was totally enthralled with their imposing interpretations. “What Is and What Should Never Be”, “I’m Gonna Crawl” were bold and brazen. They ended with a forceful “Kashmir”.
The encore was just as dazzling. “Fool in the Rain” led into a bombastic “Stairway To Heaven” GTLO capped their show with a rousing “Whole Lotta Love”. It was an excellent night of outstanding music and hanging with good friends. You can’t ask for anything better.
Just a footnote. I’ve seen numerous shows at College Street but this was the first with full seating. In my opinion, it didn’t work. I prefer to roam the house and experience the show from different angles. Plus, it felt confining. But this is only my point of view. College Street is one of the best music venues in the state with promoters who bring in marvelous talent and know how to run the room.
