JULIA POORMAN – A SINGER/SONGWRITER’S INTIMATE CONVERSATION

Julia Poorman is an incredible singer/songwriter who currently resides in New Jersey. Julia recently released her newest single “Runaway Ship” to all major platforms. The lyrics and music were written by  Poorman with music and production by Danny Roselle. The single was produced, engineered and mixed by Danny Roselle at Rosedome Studios. It was mastered by Michael Fossenkemper. Writing songs has always been second nature to Julia. As a young girl living in New York’s Finger Lakes Region, her little poems could be found stuffed in her night stand expectantly waiting for melodies to bring them to life. As soon as she’d pick up the paper, the music would come flowing out and a song would be born.

“Runaway Ship” is a beautiful track that showcases Julia‘s strong songwriting and emotive voice. A cross between pop and indie, the song carries a tender lilt with a cinematic vibe.  Poorrman‘s vocals have a melodic edge with rich textures. Danny Roselle’s guitar delivers a dreamy aura. Chris O’Hara’s percussions add a spicy flavor. Julia‘s lyrics ring personal and true. A consummate songsmith. Speaking about the tune, Julia expounds:

“Runaway Ship” embodies both the excitement and unstoppable feeling of new romance while also acknowledging the beauty in a love that is chosen over and over again despite the hardships it may face”.

Julia sat down with AMP for this fun and intimate conversion.

AMP: When did you realize you wanted to be a musician?

JULIA: I really wanted to become a pop star around eleven. As I grew older, it kind of progressed. As life changes, you have to reevaluate your space in the musical universe. So I evolved but the exploration began at an early age.

AMP: Who were some of your early musical influences?

JULIA: A lot of women from the 90’s and a bunch of alternative bands. It probably started with Alanis Morissette, Sarah McLachlan and Cheryl Crow. It progressed to artists like Taylor Swift. I also draw a lot of inspiration from the alternative bands from the 2000’s

AMP: How would you describe your music?

JULIA: I would say my music fits in the singer/songwriter mold with a touch of indie and pop rock.

AMP: Your lyrics are quite personal. Is it hard putting your feelings into words?

JULIA: It comes natural to me. I use it as a form of performance therapy. When I am writing and singing through a song, it’s very therapeutic. I’m working through something. It’s just an organic way for me to express my feelings.

AMP: If you could collaborate with one artist, who would it be and why?

JULIA: That’s hard. Just one? Lately I’ve been vibing Kacey Musgraves. I feel her music tetters between genres. Even though she seems to be country, she has morphed into a indie/folk/pop artist. I think it’s cool to walk the line like that. In addition, she’s a great songwriter.

AMP: How supportive was your local music scene?

JULIA: I grew up in a really small town. It was supportive but not like where I live now. There’s a music academy right down the street. Kids from there are playing gigs at the Stone Pony when they are twelve years old. It’s crazy! Where I grew up, the community was very supportive and came out to see me play. I had a lot of family and friends in the area that came to see my shows. They brought CDs and merch but the opportunities weren’t really there.

AMP: You have been an entrepreneur. Has that contributed to your musical growth?

JULIA: I think so. With me revisiting my music, I now make better life decisions. My experiences have allowed me to listen to my gut more. I am more mature. Just by having more business and life acumen, my senses have been sharpened. I can use my acquired marketing skills and drive to book better gigs and understand contracts better.

AMP: Tell us about your favorite live performance to date?

JULIA: I played a show last summer at the Langosta Lounge. That was a lot of fun and I would love to do that again.

AMP: What is the most useless skill you have?

JULIA: Ha Ha Ha. I can clap without slapping my hands. (She proceeds to quickly wave her hands and produces a clapping sound. I think it’s an awesome talent)

AMP: How has the internet impacted your musical career?

JULIA: With the dawn of streaming, there are positive and negative aspects. You are able to get so many more ears listening to your music with just the click of a button. That being said, every artist knows there is a downside. But it does allow me the chance to expand my audience in a very amazing way. Traditionally you constantly play local gigs to grow your fanbase. Now I can reach a massive amount of people from all over the world in a quick amount of time.

AMP: What’s next for Julia?

JULIA: Keep doing more of the same but doing it bigger and better.
