THEE SACRED SOULS/LA LOM – THE ROYALE BOSTON

By Bailey Grullon

Thee Sacred Souls supported by La Lom curated an absolute perfect performance on a cold and frigid night in Boston. This show gave the audience a place to escape to not just for the night, but a place to return to by simply closing your eyes and listening.

La Lom transformed Boston’s Royale into a slice of Californian heaven. Even though the venue was indoors, your skin could feel a slight tingle of the sun and the distant scent of sweet, fresh, and warm air tangoed through the hall. La Lom is an instrumental trio made of guitar, drums, and upright bass drawing heavy inspiration from cumbia and bolero.

Similar to Thee Sacred Souls, La Lom is reminiscent of 60s latin dance clubs; the integration of classic Latin clave rhythms and smooth, silky melodies dance their way into your ears and body. Even if you do not know how to dance, La Lom gives music the natural flow you need to move your body. Their namesake EP titled La Lom released August of 2022 is the perfect four song experience. Just over 14 minutes long, is a romantic and soulful vacation just short of packing your bags. Simply put, La Lom’s rounded and warm sound can be described as nothing short of infectious.

Thee Sacred Souls describe themselves as “Southern California sweet soul” and they are absolutely correct. Hearing them for the first time is an experience, but seeing and hearing them live for the first time is a gift. Their sound is organic and nostalgic with definite notes of 60s soul and 70s R&B. With songs like “Will I See You Again?” and “Can I Call You Rose?”, you quickly swoon and fall for a love you didn’t know you had.

Their harmonies, skillful use of falsetto, and tight-knit band coordination create an engaging, fun, romantic, and smooth listening experience right out of a movie. It was no mystery why Thee Sacred Souls asked La Lom to join their Boston tour stop. Both groups marry classic and modern soul while re-introducing old sounds to new audiences.

The venue was packed tight from door to stage and from wall to wall filled with dancers, lovers, and music enthusiasts just enjoying the moment and not worrying about when the night would end.

If you have a chance to see La Lom or Thee Sacred Souls live, absolutely do it. If you can only listen to their records for now, absolutely do that too.
