TRIVIUM/BEARTOOTH – LIVE @ COLLEGE STREET

On May 13th, College Street Music Hall in New Haven hosted another strong bill of outstanding artists. Co-headliners Trivium and Beartooth brought their hard hitting tour with Malevolence and Archetypes Collide for support. All four bands bring dynamic hi-energy music that devours their audiences with a torrent of sonic intensity.

Up first was Archetypes Collide. Their 7 song set was full of brazen depth. The group is composed of Kyle Pastor (Vocals), Brandon Baker (Guitar), Jared Knister (Guitar), Ky Sanders (Bass) and Tyler Flamm (Drums). AC have received massive airplay on Octane and rightly so. Their music packs a forceful punch and on this night, the room enjoyed their vigor even though the sound mix was initially off. They opened with “Parasite” and continued their assault with “Destiny” and Linkin Park’s “One Step Closer”. They finished the set with their huge hit “Your Misery”. Their recent release is their self titled full length via Fearless Records. Archetypes Collide were a perfect opener.

Malevolence was up next. The room was full of anticipation as this was their first time in Ct. Again, the sound was slightly askewed at the beginning (lacking a heavy bass sound) but once they were dialed in they brought their A game. Malevolence is made of Alex Taylor (Lead Vocals), Josh Baines (Guitar), Konan Hall (Guitar/Vocals), Wilkie Robinson (Bass) and Charlie Thorpe (Drums). They also had a seven song set in which they played several tracks from their 2022 album, Malicious Intent (MLVLTD Records/Nuclear Blast). “Malicious Intent” was the first song up and right from the start the band was aggressive. The crowd relished in their pulverizing groove. “Life Sentence” and “Higher Place” slayed. They ended with “On Broken Glass”. I personally can’t wait for their return.

As soon as Beartooth hit the stage the energy totally shot up. Beartooth has been a monster lately. They are constantly on tour and their live shows simply rip. The group is comprised of Caleb Shomo (Vocals), Oshie Bichar (Bass/Vocals), Connor Denis (Drums), Zach Huston (Lead Guitar) and Will Deely (Rhythm Guitar). Their music is fierce but melodic and Shomo’s voice is blatantly incendiary. The performance covered tracks from many of their prodigious releases. Opening with “Devastation” from Below, the room was utterly enthralled. “Body Bag”, “Sunshine” and “Disease” were definitely fan favorites. Beartooth finished the regular set with “Riptide”. They retuned with “The Past Is Dead” and “The Last Riff”.

Trivium was the last band on and College Street was engaged from the start. Everyone was singing, jumping, headbanging, moshing and even crowd surfing. Trivium consists of Matt Heafy (Lead Vocals/Guitar), Corey Beaulieu (Guitar/Unclean Vocals), Paolo Gregoletto (Bass/Vocals) and Alex Bent (Drums). The band crosses many genres to produce an addictive mix of aural fearlessness. Their use of metalcore, melodic metal, prog, and trash turns their fans into a relentless swarm of avid devotees. Hailing from South Florida, Trivium has built a reputation of tenacious live shows. They are absolutely road warriors.

This evening, they began with “Rain” , “Like Light to the Flies” and “Strife”. The room loved the rage Trivium was pouring out. “Built to Fall” and “Down From the Sky” were well received and the excitement continued to build. By the time they hit “The Heart From Your Hate” and “Capsizing the Sea”, everyone was undeniably feeling Trivium‘s force. They closed out with “In Waves”, one of my favorite songs, and “Pull Harder on the Strings of Your Martyr”. A performance to remember.

What a night! Four excellent bands that complimented each other nicely. A definite coup for College Street.
