8KIDS – ARTIST SOWCASE AND ALBUM REVIEW
We at AMP are the recipients of many public relations companies and record label press releases. One particular label has an amazing PR department. The people at Austria’s Napalm Records are quite diligent. We receive a ton of information from them. Napalm Records is the home to a considerable amount of top notch talent such as Alter Bridge and Hoobastank.
I recently received a press offering for the German band 8Kids. The band is a trio comprised of Jonas Jakob (Vocals), Emma McLellan (Drums) and Hans Koch (Guitar). 8KIds new album, Blūten, was released in August of 2019. Blūten is 10 songs of post-hardcore/rap/pop that according to their press release “pushes boundaries and tears down barricades”.
Just fyi, 8Kids vocals are all in German. Even though I can’t understand the lyrics, their music transcends. Their songs are powerful and dynamic. Jakob’s coarse vocals are full of emotion and fervor. McLellan’s drumming is forceful and Kock’s guitar work always preeminent.
All the songs on Blūten rock. They combine multiple genres to create aural soundscapes that are totally original. It’s almost impossible to pigeon hole their music. They mix their hardcore base with slices of pop and rap to construct compelling hybrid melodies.
Again, according to their press release the band has “positioned themselves more than ever, both musically and socially, with political, controversial yet important statements“. One of the songs on the record is “Ich Gehore Dir Nicht” (I Don’t Belong To You) which deals with the important topic of violence against women.
Guitarist Hans Koch is quoted as saying: “The inspiration for the song about domestic violence comes from my private environment. A story that has accompanied me for many years. It has taken me some time to find the right words and above all the right approach“.
Outside of the a fore mentioned song Blūten is chock full of gems. “Wir Bleiben Kids” (feat. Swiss) is definitely a standout. Its strong beat and Jakob’s commanding vocals carries the intense tune. Rapper Swiss’ guest appearance is a definitive benefit. “Du Gegan Dich” is another compelling song with its catchy chorus and driving guitar. “Spiegebild” catches you with its primal punk vibes.
Blūten is an awe inspiring offering. 8Kids dishes out a sonic masterpiece. The band offers solid tunes while attacking many of the grievances against society. I may not understand the words but the music carries the day.
8KIds just released a poignant new single a few days ago called “Stay the Fuck Home”. Another potent piece of music with a important message. Like Jakob says STAY THE FUCK HOME.
