AYRON JONES – LIVE AT THE WOLF DEN

Ayron Jones is an amazing talent. Not only is he an impressive guitarist but also a dynamic singer and formidable songwriter. His new album entitled Child Of The State (Big Machine/John Varvatos Records) is a stunning offering. The record contains 12 ferocious songs full of ruthless rock and blistering blues with a smattering of grunge. Jones‘ guitar howls majestic throughout the disc. His naturally bluesy voice carries each tune with an sublime intensity. In other word, Child Of the State slays.

Once again the Wolf Den at Mohegan Sun hosted a forceful talent. Last week we caught Quinn Sullivan tearing up the venue. Now it was Ayron Jones‘ turn. Jones was incredible. His brazen demeanor flowed through the room and captured the audience from the first song. His stage presence was calm and cool. He loomed large with an invincible swagger. The man has the perfect gnarly posture. A definite superstar in the making.

Most of the set contained songs from Child Of The State. Opening with a tenacious version of “Boys From The Puget Sound”, Jones set the mood. It was going to be a night of pummeling hard rock and stellar blues. His vocals were voracious and his guitar was firmly incendiary. His band comprised of Bob Lovelace (Bass), Matthew Jacquette (Guitar) and Bobbi Jimmi (Drums) were equally up to the task. Lovelace was totally manic while Jacquette played magnificently. Jimmi on drums was flawless.

Up next was the gutsy “Emily” with its addictive tempo and yearning lyric. Jones‘ guitar packed a textured punch while his vocals soared. By now the audience was feeling the glowing musical vibes. “Supercharged” brought back the fire. The song just cranks. Everyone was getting into the awesome groove the band was laying down. Nirvana’s “Breed” followed. Ayron‘s rendition was true to form yet he decidedly made it his own to the appreciation of the room.

“Spinning Circles” came next. The crowd really enjoyed the beautiful ballad with rock flourishes. Jones‘ voice took on a different quality. His vocals were emotive and passionate. Jones then played the dramatic tunes “Killing Season” and  “Free”. Again his guitar was monstrous with a melodic lushness. After “Take Your Time”, Jones powered through an energized “Baptized in Muddy Water”. The song with its spiritual feel was a big hit. We were all witnessing to the lord.

Jones proceeded with the extremely refined “My Love Remains”. Afterwards the venue was in for a treat. Once he played the first notes of his huge hit, “Mercy”, the audience erupted with delight. The song is a savage track with a sonic burst of cannon fire. Right after he hit everyone with the killer, “Take Me Away” with its explosive beat and riff driven guitar. Jones‘ muscular voice was totally demanding and captivating. For the encore, Ayron sang a fierce version of Prince’s “Purple Rain”.

What a night. Ayron Jones will be a major artist within a short time. His amazing songwriting and excellent musicianship will shine bright.
