BRYONY JARMAN-PINTO

Bryony Jarman-Pinto is an English singer/songwriter whose sublime voice is full of layered textures and brilliant tones.

Raised in an artistic family in Penrith, Cumbria, she was exposed to music at an early age. Jargon-Pinto went to school to study painting and printmaking but when she met long time friend and collaborator Tom Leah her focus redirected to music. And what music it is!!

Bryony Jarman-Pinto‘s debut album, Cage And Aviary (Tru Thoughts), is an amazing array of soulful jazz songs that easily melts the spirit and surrounds the senses with sensual and sultry vibes. Just listen to “Sun Kissed”. The tune just finger snaps all your anxieties and tensions into the stratosphere. Add a glass of wine and you find heaven. The sharp songwriting and celestial harmonies uplifts Cage And Aviary to an instant classic. The grooves just suck you in.

The following is an interview with Bryony Jarman-Pinto about self, music, and Cage And Aviary.

AMP: Who is Bryony Jarman-Pinto?

BJP: I’m based in London, though I have spent most of my living in the north of England and Scotland where I studied Art in Glasgow. I’m loving London and the opportunity to progress my music career alongside working on community and freelance music projects.

AMP: How did your upbringing in Cumbria shape your artistry?

BJP: When I was a teen my friends and I spent a lot of time singing together and writing songs. Most of the opportunities I had to perform when I was young came through being part of BlueJam Arts. It’s also where Tom Leah (AKA Werkha) and I first stated playing music together within our friendship group.

AMP: Your music leans heavily on Jazz and Soul. How did you develop such a cultivated palette?

BJP: Both my parents are Jazz musicians. Growing up with my mum, my sister and I were surrounded by live music and also had the opportunity to explore instruments.

AMP: How did your collaboration with Tom Leah shape your sound?

BJP: This album was a collaboration with Tom Leah (Werkha) and we were keen that both our musical styles came through in the writing and production. Werkha introduced the electronic side of the album, which is an area I haven’t explored much. It was exciting to see where he was taking the songs, exploring different music genres and synth sounds.

AMP: Your songs “Saffron Yellow” and “Sun Kissed” are so smooth and engages the soul in such a positive way. Was that your intention?

BJP: I don’t have a clear intention when starting a song, but when I’m writing lyrics and the beginnings of a song it all has meaning to me and I hope that that is reflected in the end result.

AMP: How do you feel about the major accolades the new album is receiving?

BJP: It’s so exciting! I’m really enjoying hearing the feedback from people, especially when someone has gone out of their way to contact me. I feel very energized by it all.

AMP: Any plans for an extended tour especially in the U.S.?

BJP: We are organizing a small tour around the U.K. this autumn and I would love to tour internationally and visit North America. I’ve got a lot of work before I get to that stage though.

I want to thank Bryony Jarman-Pinto for her time. She is an astonishing new talent that will definitely make waves in the very near future.
