BYRON MESSIA – ARTIST SPOTLIGHT & SINGLES REVIEW
Even though only 23 years old, Byron Messia has made an impressive imprint in the Caribbean dancehall scene. Born in Jamaica and raised in St Kitts, Byron began his musical career at an early age. He fell in love with dancehall taking inspiration from artists like Masicka and Rod Wave. With a barrage of dynamic albums and singles, Byron has building a massive fanbase in the Caribbean, UK and the US. Tracks like “Taliban” and the recently released “La La” ft. Suarez have taken the Trinibad subgenre of dancehall by storm.
His first album was the 2018 Byron Messia which immediately made a mark in the musical universe. Messia‘s last album, No Love, released by Xtekk/Simple Stupid/Geffen Records reached #8 in the Billboard Reggae Albums chart. The full length delivered a huge hit “Talibans” and the Billboard 100 charting “Talibans II” ft. Burma Boy. This song cemented Messia‘s strong songwriting and inventive beats. Though his music features some of dancehall’s signature braggadocio, Byron takes a more introspective approach, focusing on his pain and showcasing his singing voice, creating a hybrid style that the artist calls “dancesoul.”
“Talibans” is a laid back masterpiece of dancehall greatness. Messia‘s voice is smooth and full of emotive energy. His beats carry a Caribbean elegance that are both sublime and singular. The whole vibe is lush with spellbinding textures. His vocals are boldly hypnotic with a propulsive edge. Even though the tempo is groove-laden, Byron’s lyrics are sinister and full of dark scenarios. That is the beauty of “Talibans”. Easy to feel the compelling musical accents but dig deep and there is a menacing vibrato. Messia knows how to mesh both worlds.
“La La” ft. Suarez continues Messia‘s aural assault. Once again, the cadence is brazen and tension filled. The track is from Byron‘s next album entitled Sad & Famous. The rhythm is mesmerizing and the piano backbeat adds a monstrous tone. The collab is audacious. Suarez complements Messia perfectly. The song has a spicy ambiance with an imposing harmonic elegance. The emotional and pummeling melodic new single arrives alongside a music video that establishes Byron as a leader of a band of rebels in a post-apocalyptic landscape.
Byron Messia will be a dominant powerhouse in the very near future. He has already built his base and once his new music is out, he can easily conquer the current reggae arena. His blending of dancehall, R&B, hip-hop and Afrobeats is sonic and he is on the path to global stardom. Just be ready for his explosive onslaught.
