CATCH YOUR BREATH – AN ARTIST SPOTLIGHT AND SINGLE REVIEW
By Ralph Beauchamp
Catch Your Breath is a four piece alt-rock group hailing from Austin, TX. The band is comprised of Josh Mowery (Vocals), Teddy Herrera (Guitar), Cianan Madigan (Bass) and Onell Hernandez (Drums). Catch Your Breath have released their new single entitled “Lost” today (1/23) via Thriller Records.
Catch Your Breath’s music is defined by a carefully balanced tension between heaviness and atmosphere. Their sound sits firmly in modern alt-rock, but it leans toward a polished, cinematic approach rather than raw chaos. Downtuned guitars create a thick, suffocating weight, often built around slow, deliberate riffs that prioritize groove and emotional impact over technical flash. This heaviness feels controlled and intentional, giving the band a sense of restraint that amplifies the power of each breakdown and chorus when it finally hits.
A key element of their sound is contrast, particularly between aggression and vulnerability. Verses frequently rely on sparse instrumentation, allowing space for tension to build before erupting into massive choruses or crushing breakdowns. Clean vocals are melodic and emotive. They carrying a sense of desperation or introspection, while harsh vocals cut through with a sharp, visceral edge. This push and pull mirrors the emotional themes in their music, making the sonic shifts feel purposeful rather than formulaic.
The production style of Catch Your Breath plays a major role in shaping their identity. Everything feels crisp and modern, with layered guitars, tight low-end, and punchy drums that hit hard without overwhelming the mix. Electronic textures and subtle ambient effects are often woven into the background, adding depth and mood without distracting from the core metal sound. This polished production enhances the band’s ability to create immersive, almost cinematic soundscapes.
Rhythmically, the band favors slow-to-mid-tempo pacing that emphasizes weight and impact. Rather than relying on constant speed or complexity, they use repetition and space to let riffs breathe and hit harder. Breakdowns are often minimalistic but devastating, built on simple patterns that feel massive due to timing and tone. This approach makes their music feel accessible while still delivering the intensity expected from heavy music fans.
Overall, Catch Your Breath’s sound feels emotionally charged and intentionally crafted, blending modern alt-rock heaviness with atmospheric and melodic sensibilities. Their music doesn’t just aim to be loud or aggressive; it aims to create a mood, drawing listeners into a dark, reflective space. By combining polished production, dynamic vocal performances, and a strong sense of atmosphere, they’ve carved out a sound that feels both contemporary and deeply expressive.
“Lost” is the new single from Catch Your Breath. The theme is rooted in heartbreak and emotional devastation. Mowery’s vocals are subtlety explosive. The spellbinding essence of his voice is incendiary. Herrera’s guitar shimmers with an edgy determination. The backbeat of Madigan and Hernandez flares with propulsive energy. In addition, the arrangement soars with a forceful vigor. “Lost” is truly all-devouring.
