CHELSEA WOLFE

The introspective songwriter and artist Chelsea Wolfe has released three new singles from her upcoming album, Birth of Violence. “American Darkness”, “The Mother Road” and “Be All Things” all delve deeply into the brooding and dramatic inner working of Wolfe‘s psyche.

Wolfe‘s is no stranger to intense visions of  her personal life and the dark volatile world that surrounds us all. Her previous recordings (Hiss Spun, Abyss, Apokalypsis) have merged the beauty of her ethereal voice with the harshness of gnashing guitars, pounding bass and trippy electronica.

Chelsea Wolfe has been categorized as goth rock/doom metal/dark folk but she refuses to be pigeonholed to any generic music genre. She intentionally devolves her music from release to release. She recently remarked ” I do have a hard time sticking with one genre, and honestly I prefer it that way. I’d rather be free to experiment and make the kind of art I want to make than be easy to define“.

With her new singles Wolfe has returned to the her dark/light folkish essence. Another turn from 2017’s Hiss Spun with its metallic textures and effervescent chaos. One can feel the influence of  label mates Russian Circles (Sargent House) in the intense musing of Hiss Spun.

The first single released from Birth of Violence, “The Mother Road”,  has Wolfe‘s poetic ramblings juxtaposed over a strumming guitar and subdued percussion. By the second verse Wolfe adds brooding synth and ends with a hypnotic cascading bridge.

“American Darkness” brings  Wolfe‘s balladry and somber timbre to the forefront. “American Darkness” is a masterpiece in the the beauty of despair and psychosis. Her velvety voice drives the listener deep into a mystic ritual of introspection. She enthralls her lover “won’t you dance” and her celestial and ghostly arrangement enhances the feeling of morose and foreboding.

Wolfe‘s newest single, “Be All Things” is a true testament to her folkish nature. A delicate tune with acoustic guitar and minimalist electronica. Her voice resonates with both amazing plangency and infinite sadness. “Be All Things” again shows the dichotomy of Wolfe‘s writing; exquisite and at the same time haunting and forlorn.

Chelsea Wolfe is a musical force that has to be reckoned with. Her new album will catapult her to a new level. This is what true artistry should be. Amazing and unpredictable.
