COLD STARES / S.A.M. / ASTORIA STATE

THE COLD STARES

AMP featured The Cold Stares in May when they released a couple of imposing singles. Well, the Indiana duo has released a new single, “Heavy Shoes”, which is the title track of their forthcoming album on Mascot Records. “Heavy Shoes” is a dense bluesy tune with a crunchy hard rock feel. Guitarist Chris Tapp punches driving dynamic riffs over Brian Mullin’s embolden percussions. The song rocks with an impressive blues grittiness.  Also, Tapp’s voice carries a ferocious intensity and has a really edgy feel.

Speaking of the song, Chris Tapp explains: Heavy Shoes is a metaphor for the baggage we all carry, whether it’s a relationship, an addiction, or just something you can’t let go. That feeling of every step being heavier than the last and not being able to carry the baggage any further“. The video was shot in an abandoned 19th century church that seemed to breathe with the energy of those who had once filled its halls. Again Tapp expounds: “Like a lot of places I love, you can feel the memories and peoples experiences in the walls“.

The Cold Stares new Mascot record, Heavy Shoes, is scheduled to drop August 13th.

SAVAGE AFTER MIDNIGHT (S.A.M.)

Another artist AMP reviewed in May was Savage After Midnight. We reviewed their powerful single “Remedy”. Now, the Tn.-based band lets go of a new tenacious single, “So Low”. The composition cranks with aggressive energy and gusto. The guitars are ruthless and the beat is infectious. Shi Eubank’s vocals are gutsy with a merciless voracity.

Speaking of about the song, Eubank’s says: “So Low” was so much fun to create. I told the producers ( Andrew Baylis and Jayden Panesso) I wanted a good blend of heavy and sing-along, so we did just that. The song is about the struggle of wanting to stay with someone that always puts you second“. The “So Low” video was shot by Eric Dicarlo of Square Up Studios.

Savage After Midnight have come out swinging for the fences with these new singles.

ASTORIA STATE

Astoria State recently released their new song, “Leave It To Me”. The tune is the follow up to their successful first single, “Nobody Knows”. The band is comprised of Danny Resnick (Lead Vocals/Guitar), Jesse Carroll (Guitar) and Cameron Horst (Bass). The band delivers a harder-edged indie sound while incorporating palettes of deep textures. Their songwriting is elevated with exalted vocals and harmonies. The guitars tackle a cinematic sound with lush elements yet still retain a jagged fervency.

Elaborating on the song, Danny Resnick says: “Leave It To Me” is just a good, old fashion rock song. It has these light verses that are very friendly and seem chipper though they serve almost as more of a confessional, or at least the reflections of someone who is beaten but not broken“. The track was produced by Ron Winter of The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus which is also the band Astoria State will support on their upcoming tour. The “Leave It To Me” video was shot in a desolate but beautiful area of Hemet, California by Sean Sweetman of Sweetman Media.

It’s an awesome start for the memorable Astoria State.
