DARK SUN – ARTIST SPOTLIGHT & SINGLES REVIEW
I must say I really love grunge. It’s a genre of music that has always soaked my soul with adrenalin. Well, the dynamic Dark Sun based out of the backwoods of Northern Illinois have championed a hybrid of grunge and fearless hard rock. The band’s sound will remind many of Alice In Chains but who gives a fuck. These boys can play and their music is full of brilliant sonic nuisances that makes them an entity of their own.
The band is made up of Tristan Sheedlo (Vocals/Lead Guitar), Luke Sheedlo (Drums), Aaron Dennin (Bass) and Morgan Earp (Rhythm Guitar). This year, Dark Sun have dropped a series of tension-filled singles in anticipation of their sophomore full length, Spine, set to release in the near future. Dark Sun‘s debut LP was their self-titled, Dark Sun put out in 2019.
Earlier in the year, Dark Sun delivered two strong songs entitled “Losing It” and “Drag Me Down”. “Losing It” features a driving groove and ferocious vocals from Tristan. The guitars fill the tune with enormous energized riffs and demanding solos. Dennin’s bass radiates a thumping aural barrage while Luke’s percussions vent a fiery assault. “Dragging Me Down” offers more of the same with an avalanche of tenacious guitars and an addictive beat. Tristan’s vocals soar with captivating stamina and moxie. The guitar solo is intensely brutal with a killer attack. The track is plainly a powerful monster of a beast.
Another single, “Forsaken”, is a ruthless tune that commands a murderous cadence and showcases the brilliance of Dark Sun‘s impressive songwriting. Everything about the tune stirs the embers of my spirit. Tristan’s vocals are infinitely menacing while the guitars emit enormous chunks of grungy licks. Dennin’s bass is demonic and the drums shell out dark elements of pure beauty. Their newest single is the imposing “Trapped In The Dark”. It’s a supersized sludge fest which once again lays down an incendiary layer of blackened textures. The heavy riffs and hammering pulse is a perfect fit to the song’s brutal character.
Speaking of new single the band says:
“Trapped In The Dark is a song about someone who feels like they have been wronged by someone close to them. And now they’re out for revenge”.
If these singles are any indication of the fury of Spine, Dark Sun will be a name to remember. I have never experienced the band first hand but just from their stellar videos I can envision a savage performance full on kinetic fire.
