DAVA – “STICKY” & “NEW CEILINGS” – SINGLES REVIEW

Los Angeles based pop upstart Dava recently dropped her audacious new single entitled “Sticky”. The track is the follow-up to her impressive release, “New Ceilings”, issued earlier this year.  Dava“s smooth tone is a mixture of sensual pop nuances and masterful R&B inflections. Also, she adds some divine soul accents with groove-laden edgy beats to create something fresh and unique.

Originally from the Oklahoma and Texas area, Dava taught herself how to play guitar with a guitar gifted from her mother who passed away when she was eight. Soon she was writing her own material. At 18, Dava moved to Colorado where she began finding her voice as a singer/songwriter through coffee shops open mics. Once moving to L.A. she quickly began to amass a grassroots following.

2020 saw Dava releasing several voracious singles. “Right Time”, “Papercut” and “ASOS” all laid down a tenacious foundation to her burgeoning carrier. On these tunes, Dava‘s melodic and emotive voice creates an adventurous soundscape with lush textures and infectious rhythms.

“New Ceilings” is spicy tune with an imposing beat. Dava‘s vocals are dreamingly cinematic with a lofty resonance. The song is about a lover looking to escape a relationship with a pretentious partner. Dava croons:

Why you tryna ruin my night? Why you tryna ruin my night? You know I don’t need you, right?

Wouldn’t wanna be you

Got a million reasons why

Too worried about an address You just way too 90210

I’m talkin’ sad rich

Why you tryna ruin my night? Why you tryna ruin my night? (Yeah)

“Sticky” is a fun song with a dynamic upbeat tempo. It’s got a snappy groove and Dava‘s voice carries an intrepid bounce. The cadence has an addictive flow with a sublime arrangement. “Sticky” is the perfect summer beach tune with it’s lively feel and animated pulse.  Speaking about “Sticky”, Dava espouses:

“I made “Sticky” with some of my best friends, it’s probably the happiest record we’ve ever created. I was listening to a lot of Gwen and Beastie Boys and throughout the process of making this song we found a lot of freedom in taking such a clean sound and pairing it with the surprise bridge. That’s my favorite thing about music – the freedom of putting as much of you into a song as possible. I think “Sticky” is the perfect record to leave behind before a new era“.

Dava‘s debut EP is due out later this year as she continues to explore her breathe as an artist. She will be a massive force in the very near future. Dava‘s new era is around the corner.

I like her sound and vocal style. Interestingly, alt-rock band The Maine also have a single named “Sticky”, which is currently on the alternative rock charts, as well as my Weekly Top 30.
