DAVE GROHL – “THE STORYTELLER” – AT TOWN HALL
Those of you who know me, or read some of my reviews know I’m a big Foo Fighters fan. Lead singer and Foo Fighters founder Dave Grohl released a new book “The Storyteller”. Accompanying the book’s release Grohl is on a mini book tour. I was fortunate enough to get one of the tickets to New York City’s Town Hall, a small 1500 seat venue, for the show October 5th when the book was released.
I think Grohl could have talked all night, he did go almost 3 hours, telling stories and interacting with the crowd. He came out and played guitar over the Beatles “Eight Days a Week” explaining that was how he learned the guitar. He sat on the floor and played drums over a Scream song on a bunch of pillows saying he learned the drums this way because he had no room for a drum set in his house. Scream was the punk band Grohl was in before joining Nirvana.
He talked about that time in his life and played the drums over “Smells like Teen Spirit”. He did need a moment when a still of Kurt Cobain was on the big screen and he talked about the sudden end of Nirvana. Next he said he just wanted to get away from the memory of it all but when he was in a remote part of Ireland he picked up a hitchhiker who was wearing a Cobain t shirt and realized there was nowhere to go to do that.
He then decided to record some songs he had kicking around and started the Foo Fighters, really as a sorta joke. Grohl played “Times Like These” and “My Hero” and went into more about getting the Foo Fighters together and some stories of the road. “Learn to Fly” was next followed by “Best of You”. As with the Foo Fighters, Grohl doesn’t say goodbye but closes with “Everlong”.
A lot of great stories and I could have sat there all night. I think he could have kept talking too. A copy of the book was included with the ticket. I’ve started it and am looking forward to the rest. If you’re a fan I recommend getting yourself a copy. Grohl is a great storyteller and has plenty to say.
