DEAD EYES – AN IN-DEPTH INTERVIEW WITH THE BAND
By Ralph Beauchamp
Dead Eyes are on an upswing. The four piece powerhouse based out of Baltimore have just released their new single entitled “Take Me Too” via new label, Thriller Records. Dead Eye‘s music is a forceful blend of charismatic yet edgy vocals and dynamic songwriting. “Take Me Too’ is a wonderful example of this. Zach Williams (Vocals) captures an astounding amount of kinetic energy while still delivering melodic intonations. Jim Poggi (Guitar) powers through savage riffs and incendiary accents. Eric Rembecki (Bass) lays down singular basslines while Chris Chapman’s (Drums) percussions are intoxicating.
Dead Eyes will be embarking soon on a tour with Set It Off and Weathers. They have already shared the stage with such luminaries as I Prevail, Fit For a King and Attack Attack!. With their new association with Thriller Records, Dead Eyes are poised to write a new chapter in their already illustrious existence. They will continue to expand their quest to dominate the musical universe with their strong musicianship, monstrous arrangements and daring live performances. Dead Eyes are force to be reckoned with. They take no prisoners.
Dead Eyes was kind enough to sit with AMP for this in-depth interview.
AMP: How did you come up with the name Dead Eyes?
DE: During an archery class in 2009, Eric took an arrow to the knee. His teacher, frantic from all the commotion removed the arrow from his knee, and placed it in his eye. One of the onlookers shouted “WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!”. The teacher exclaimed “He’s got Dead Eyes! We must kill it with fire.”
AMP: How does your creative process work?
DE: Usually one of us comes up with an idea and brings it to the band and we work on it from there. That could be just a synth lead or a full song. Wherever the best song is, that’s where we wanna be.
AMP: Your new single “Take Me Too” is charged with volatile electricity. Can you give us a little insight into the track?
DE: It was a difficult year for us with a lot of loss. This one is definitely a cathartic expression of all those feelings and thoughts.
AMP: You recently switched labels. Why is Thriller Records a good fit?
DE: Thriller is a great fit for us because they understand the band and what we’re trying to do. On top of being some of the loveliest most professional people we know; They also are true believers in us. It’s good having like minded people on your side.
AMP: Who were some of your early influences?
DE: I think it’s a little bit different for all of us but some of the ones we share are: Killswitch Engage, Sevendust, Slipknot and Nickelback.
AMP: In today’s music scene, there seems to be a sink or swim mentality. Does this type of realism have any effect on the band?
DE: We feel it every day. We’ve been “sinking” so to speak for a really long time and only in the last year have we started to hit our stride. The struggle is what you make of it though. The deep end can be scary but sometimes getting thrown in it is the only way to learn. Coming out the other side a little stronger for it is SO rewarding.
AMP: Which album had you wished you had written and why?
DE: Killswitch Engage: The End of Heartache. We think it showed a generation of people that heavy music has such an amazing capacity for a catchy ass chorus.
AMP: What’s the proudest moment of your career so far?
DE: Signing to Thriller for sure. When the label started we made it a goal of ours to eventually end up there so it was one of the first BIG goals that we had hit as a band.
AMP: You are touring with Set It Off and Weathers. How stoked are you?
DE: You remember two seconds ago when you asked about our proudest moments? We think we’re about to go out there and make more of them.
AMP: Where do you see Dead Eyes 5 years down the road?
DE: We hope to be traveling the world and playing our songs for as many people as possible. If it’s 5 or 5,000 we’ll be good with that.
