FLASH FORWARD – A CONVERSATION WITH JAKOB WOLFF
Jakob Wolff is the bassist of the brazen German pop-punk band Flash Forward. Their sound is fresh and full of melodic surprises. The group is comprised of Wolff, Stefan Weigel (Guitar/Vocals), Gerrit Kuehne (Guitar/Vocals) and Tino Wilczewski (Drums). Flash Forward released their newest full length, Endings = Beginnings today (Dec. 9th). The album delivers 13 songs that breathe the spirit of the times, Flash Forward repeatedly pose the question of how gloomy circumstances challenge us, what our acceptance of difficult situations requires, and how not to lose sight of the next chapter in uncertain times.
It couldn’t be more fitting that Flash Forward would take this discussion of new beginnings to their sixth album with an outrageously fresh sonic repertoire: Never before has the band turned the “pop” in “pop-punk” inside out as confidently and innovatively as on Endings = Beginnings, while simultaneously embedding it in an alternative sound that no longer needs to hide from international role models. It’s a record that weaves brilliant synthesizers around the most stirring moments of You Me At Six and celebrates the unfailing anthems of The Hunna with the most sonic of bows.
Jakob Wolff gave AMP this bold interview.
AMP: Can you give the AMP readers a brief history of the band?
JAKOB: The band has already existed for 10 years. Since then we have released 5 albums and played almost 500 concerts in Europe. Among them the biggest festivals in Germany and support tours with Enter Shikari, You Me At Six and Palaye Royal.
AMP: How would you best describe Flash Forward’s music?
JAKOB: Rousing alternative songs and unforgettable hooklines that effortlessly manage the balancing act between radio and rock club.
AMP: What is your creative process like?
JAKOB: Our singer Stefan usually writes lyrics and music together. The songs are then produced in the studio.
AMP: Your new album is entitled Endings = Beginnings Do you feel it’s an evolution in musical style from your previous material?
JAKOB: It is absolutely an evolution. We want to constantly evolve. Every album is a new chance and should not sound like the album before.
AMP: What is one message you would like your fans to take away from your music?
JAKOB: No matter how sad you are. No matter how bad you feel. No matter what happens to you … We are there and want to carry you through this time with our music. It’s always worth to go on.
AMP: Who are some of the band’s major influences?
JAKOB: With our new album we have many influences from pop music to hardcore. Some bands that were guaranteed to influence us are Jimmy Eat World, You Me At Six, Enter Shikari, Deaf Havana, Biffy Clyro and many more!
AMP: If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
JAKOB: There are many! Because we love to collaborate with other artists! On this list are definitely Bring Me The Horizon, Fall Out Boy, A Day To Remember and Yellowcard.
AMP: What is your best song to play live?
JAKOB: We haven’t played most of the songs from our new album live yet and we are really looking forward to it! Songs from other albums that we love to play live are for example Kickstart, Dancing In The Dark and Shoot Me Down.
AMP: Any plans for a U.S. tour?
JAKOB: Unfortunately not so far! But we would love it!
AMP: What’s on the horizon for Flash Forward?
JAKOB: We are going on tour in Germany next year and want to play as many festivals as possible. Of course we wish to reach as many people as possible around the world with our new album!
