GLASS ANIMALS
Glass Animals‘ new release How To Be A Human Being is getting personal. With their first release Zaba, the mix of electronica, indie and hip hop was interesting and quite noteworthy. The combination of sounds was a creative groove fest. I can understand why their initial offering garnished much attention and praise. ‘Black Mambo”, “Gooey” and “Flip” mesmerized but left something missing. After extensively touring in support of Zaba, Glass Animals found their missing element. On their travels they encountered many a strange personality or story. Incorporate these tales with their strong songwriting and out pops How To Be A Human Being. How To Be A Human Being embellishes on the groundwork of Zaba and adds the missing element of intimacy. Each song is based on these chance encounters. Each tune a capsulation of an interesting experience. You are drawn to the fact that each song’s lyric places you right in the middle of Glass Animals‘ incredible journey. “Life Itself”, the initial track, introduces you to a vain misfit espousing his daily turmoils. Similarly, each song brings you a synopsis of someones positive or negative existence. “Youth” and “Season 2 Episode 3” continue Glass Animals‘ quest for a slice of life. “Mama’s Gun” and “Agnes” stand out. They are both intimate vignettes in the Glass Animals world. Not only does their songwriting get better but the music becomes both more adventurous and concise. In “Pork Soda” and “Cane Shuga” you are immersed in the southern ambiance created by the Glass Animals laid back sound. How To Be A Human Being works as a perfect textbook to one band’s positive development. Can’t wait to see where Glass Animals treks take us next.
