HALESTORM – EVANESCENCE – LIVE AT THE DCU CENTER

Three powerful women of rock, two headlining bands, and a solo act rolled into Massachusetts Thursday for an outstanding night of music.

Lilith Czar, formally known as Juliet Simms, contestant on The Voice led off the evening with a 6 song set led by “Unholy”, “Lola”, and “Anarchy”. Her vocals were strong and the backing band sounded great for a nice warm up getting the crowd ready to rock.

Halestorm took the stage next. This was the reason I was at this show. I love the band and Lzzy Hale (Vocals, Guitar) is a rare talent. The band also consists of Arejay Hale (Drums), Joe Hottinger (Guitar) and Josh Smith (Bass). The group came out with “Back From the Dead” followed by “Love Bites (So Do I)”. Lzzy then interacted with the crowd a bit, thanking everyone for coming out after this show was postponed from the original date due to Covid- 19. Next came “Apocalyptic” and “I Get Off”. The next song  “I Am the Fire” was dedicated to the Worcester Fire Department who Halestorm unfortunately got to meet as their tour bus caught on fire.

Amy Lee from Evanescence came out to join Hale on “Break In”. They sound so good together and the crowd would be treated again with dual vocals during the main act. “Amen” was followed by the drum solo. That’s never my favorite part of the show but knowing there is a Hale on drums it was to be expected. “Freak Like Me”, “Uncomfortable” and “I Miss the Misery” closed out the set. A quick hour that seemed like minutes. I only wish the band had played “Do Not Disturb” for my personal likes. Maybe next time Lzzy will consult me on the set list.

Evanescence was the headliner this evening and proved they belonged in that slot with an 18 song set filled with outstanding vocals form founding member Amy Lee (Vocals, Keyboard, Piano). I have seen them a few times and her voice never disappoints, sounding like you had the song playing in your headphones. Joining Lee were Troy McLawhorn (Guitar), Jen Majura (Guitar), Tim McCord (Bass) and Will Hunt (Drums). The band opened with “Broken Pieces Shine” followed by “ Made of Stone” and “Take Cover”. The crowd really got hyped for “Going Under” where Lee’s voice really lit up the arena. “Lose Control”, “The Change” and “Lithium” led into “Wasted on You” and “End of the Dream”.

Lee also thanked the crowd for putting up with the delays of the show and almost seemed ready to cry talking about what a ride it has been for 20 years. “Far from Heaven” and “Better Without You” followed and then “Call Me When You’re Sober” had everyone up and singing along. “Imaginary” was next and then Lzzy Hale came out to join Lee on “Heavy”, a Linkin Park cover. “Use My Voice” and “Bring Me to Life” closed out the main set. Now this is where my set list may have been different as I may not have closed the night with that but again Amy did not consult me either. The encore was “My Immortal” and “Blind Belief”.

It was an outstanding night of music, led by 3 outstanding female vocalists.
