HARRY CONNICK JR – LIVE IN BRIDGEPORT

Another trip down to The Amp (Hartford Healthcare Amphitheater) in Bridgeport. This time to see Harry Connick Jr. and his band. It was a perfect Sunday evening and I can’t think of a better way to spend it than watching a live show with my wife Eva. Eva won the tickets in a raffle at her job, I’m not the biggest jazz fan but I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this show. Harry is a spectacular musician with a raspy voice that seems made for singing jazz and classical music.

He resides in Connecticut now with his wife and three daughters, but he grew up in New Orleans and his voice has the unmistakable southern vowels that is easy on the ears. I was also surprised at how many songs I recognized, “The Way You Look Tonight”, “It Had to be You”, and “Whisper Your Name” were performed flawlessly. The music had a rhythm that had me swaying and bobbing. My fingers and toes were tapping throughout the night. The amphitheater was a perfect setting for the smooth melodies and relaxing atmosphere and by the end of the show I definably felt converted to jazz music.

Harry talked about his new album Alone With My Faith and the challenges of making music during the pandemic. He played the title song from that album and really connected with the audience The song features lyrics that I personally related to and I felt like most of the audience was drawn in by his melodious soothing story-telling voice.

“My life has changed
My world is uncertain
Everything’s strange
Everything’s new
But I’m not concerned
With what tomorrow will bring
‘Cause I’ve got today
And I’m gonna pull through

The crowd was fascinatingly quiet while Connick and his band performed. whenever someone did speak it felt like you could be heard from sections away. But don’t let that fool you, everyone was intently watching and listening and seemed unable to take their eyes off the stage. “Just One of Those Things”, “Voodoo That You Do” and “Anything Goes” By Cole Porter were all real highlights of the show. “I Love Paris”, another Cole Porter cover closed the evening out in style.

The show was awesome and the venue was even better this time around. Gone were the long lines entering the event and thanks to a bit of tailgating I was able to shy away from the expensive beverages inside. Just like my last visit to the Amphitheater I ran into quite a few friends and even an old workmate who is moonlighting as an usher at The Amp. It all made for a most enjoyable Sunday under the August sky in Bridgeport. I will be back at the end of the month to the same venue for The Beach Boys, I can hardly wait!
