HERE COME THE MUMMIES – A GHOULISH INTERVIEW
Here Come the Mummies (HCTM) is a hoot of a group. They are a large ensemble dedicated to funking-up the world in these times of mass chaos. These Egyptian Mummies have a one track mind. All they want to do is play “terrifying funk from beyond the grave” and make sure their audiences have a death defying time. Some say HCTM were cursed after deflowering a great Pharaoh’s daughter. Others claim they are reincarnated Grammy-winning studio musicians. Regardless, HCTM’s mysterious personas, cunning song-craft and unrelenting live show will melt your face.
HCTM have supported such acts as P-Funk, Al Green and Cheap Trick. Now the Mummies will be bringing their funkadelic talents to The Wall Street Theater in Norwalk, Ct. on October 8th. AMP had the pleasure of interviewing Mummy Cass (Lead Vocals/Guitar) and Midnight Mummy (Saxes/Vocals) about the history of HCTM and how the undead enjoy their time in the spotlight.
AMP: Can you give the AMP readers a brief narrative on how HCTM were dug up?
Mummy Cass: Well, we hardly remember. You know how long it takes to wake up sometimes when you’ve only been asleep for 7 or 8 hours? Think how bad that is if it’s been 700 or 800 years since you last got up to pee.
Midnight: It can take 8 to 9 months of intensive coffee therapy to get your few remaining synapses to reconnect after that.
AMP: What is HCTM’s favorite genre of music?
Mummy Cass: We like all kinds of stuff, but clearly we aren’t just into funk. Lots of other influences seep in, sometimes from unexpected angles. It’s easy to hear the Earth, Wind & Fire; Ohio Players, Sly & the Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Commodores, Meters, etc. But more difficult to hear where Cole Porter fits in.
Midnight: Or Porter Waggoner…
AMP: Your songs have interesting and somewhat bawdy lyrics. Who is responsible for the songwriting?
Mummy Cass: We all gang up. Sometimes it’s Eddie, Spaz, Midnight and TuT against “H-POD” and The Flu. You never know. But it isn’t a competition.
Midnight: You know it is, though.
Mummy Cass: He’s right. It is.
AMP: HCTM have toured extensively. What were some of your more ghastly shows?
Mummy Cass: There was that time that I lost a couple fingers on a guitar solo in Boulder. Dave, our stage manager/ guitar tech, put an extra light high E string on and well, it lopped off my right pinky and ring finger like a nice cheddar.
Midnight: A nice, moldy cheddar. You’re making me hungry.
Mummy Cass: But, if you’re asking about our favorites, there are lots. Summer Camp, Musikfest, opening for P-Funk, Al Green, Cheap Trick, Mavis Staples.
Midnight: Our first (and so far only) show in Toronto. Regular visits further West, especially Colorado.. and now hittin’ up New England harder.
AMP: How difficult is it to tour with your wraps always frazzled?
Mummy Cass: We don’t really even notice them any more.
Midnight: Just like your beard itches for a few weeks and then voila, it stops!
Mummy Cass: But you shaved, Midnight. That doesn’t count.
Midnight: Yeah. That’s true.
AMP: The lineup seems to constantly vary. Are there constants in the group?
Mummy Cass: Baby, there is nobody named Constance in the group. We get a lot of speculation that there is a lady in our ranks, but no. Just a bunch of undead dudes funkin’ up everything we see.
Midnight: I think he means are there any “steadies” from show to show.
Mummy Cass: What? Tour with our girlfriends? Is he crazy?
AMP: Does HCTM hate Brendan Fraser?
Mummy Cass: Baby, we don’t hate him. In fact, the only three movies we watch on the ghoul bus are Encino Man, Bedazzled, and George of the Jungle.
Midnight: And always in that order (sigh).
Here Comes The Mummies will be preforming on Oct.8th at the Wall Street Theater in Norwalk, Ct. Tickets are currently on sale.

Ralph!!!! This is so fun on all levels. The vocals, the instruments, the theatrics, the comedy, the costumes what doesn’t it have!!!!
They sure picked a great schtick for their act, and they’re pretty good musicians to boot.
Can’t wait to see them live.
