JOEL HOEKSTRA AND BRANDON GIBBS LIVE
On September 28th, 8 friends and I decided to to see The Campfire Tour at the charming Broad Brook Opera House in East Windsor, Ct. The Campfire Tour is an acoustic voyage through Joel Hoekstra (Whitesnake, TSO) and Brandon Gibbs (Devil City Angels and Special Guest with Poison) remarkable musical collections and narratives. I found it to be a pleasurable and humanistic infused night with heartfelt story-telling and hits, minus the smores. It was our 1st time at the recently remodeled opera house. A superb job by the owner, Tommy Kuhns, in preserving the character of the beautiful historic building. The staff and support-all top notch!
I wasn’t sure what to expect, especially since, historically, we are so used to seeing Joel Hoekstra perform with Whitesnake and Trans-Siberian Orchestra. So, this genre of music was certainly several deviations from the norm. But again, we were really excited to see Joel. Covid-19 restrictions had placed a damper in connecting with Joel after shows for a couple of years now, and we really missed that aspect. My husband and I are huge fans of Joel and musically, their paths overlap. To have an opportunity to see him up close and personal right in our home state was a real treat.
One of the highlights of the performance was Joel singing “Love Me Two Times” by the Doors. Although he jokingly came out with a most humbling comment about his capabilities and singing prowess.…no apologies needed Mr. Hoekstra! Joel indeed has a very powerful and deep voice and executed the song beautifully. It was a real treat and such a pleasant surprise. Together, Brandon and Joel’s voices blend perfectly together, amazing harmonies!! Brandon of course is a powerhouse…and we will be seeing him more in the spotlight for sure.
One of the spotlights of the show was of course, Joel’s unearthly musical abilities with the acoustic guitar. What Joel accomplished technically on an acoustic guitar is something many seasoned and world-renowned guitarists would never be able to achieve in a lifetime on the electric, never mind, an acoustic…which is a different beast and skill set. Hats off to you Joel. It was moving, breathtaking and beautiful.
Whitesnake’s Joel Hoekstra & Devil City Angels’ Brandon Gibbs are hitting the road with their Campfire Tour in September 2022!
