KISS KISS BANG – HUNGRY, HIGH & SEEING THINGS
Kiss Kiss Bang is rocking the house. The Bowling Green band just dropped their new EP entitled Hungry, High & Seeing Things to critical acclaim. The new EP follows their 2019 release, Hearts On Fire. The intensity and songwriting on the new endeavor is by far more mature and stronger than anything done previously.
Kiss Kiss Bang‘s style of music is powerhouse classic rock with a modern twist. Their songs flourish with monstrous guitar licks and perfectly executed three part harmonies. The tunes also carry a thundering rhythm section of heavy hitting percussions and crunchy bass fills. Their music is just plainly ruthless hard rock with explosive vocals.
The band is comprised of Trevor Smith (Vocals/Guitar), Clayton Crowder (Guitar/Vocals) and Andrew Hopper (Bass/Vocals). Drummer Taylor Sanders was used on the studio recording. A complete renovation from the ground up in 2018 changed not only their sound, but the band’s soul itself.
Hungry, High & Seeing Things is a four song groove laden accomplishment. Every song is a masterful jolt of kinetic energy. Just listen to “High Price (For Peace Of Mind)”. The tune is a glowing triumph of ferocious guitars, dramatic vocals and adventurous bass lines. “Easy 2 Love” is another stellar song with a punchy sound and brassy vocals. This is a record you’re going to want to turn up….ALL the way up.
Clayton Crowder of Kiss Kiss Bang was kind enough to answer a few questions for AMP.
AMP: How would describe the band’s sound?
CLAYTON: It’s a combination of so many genres, influences and experiences. We all just genuinely love good songs. So I think it’s natural that we all are super inspired by good songwriters. We’re seriously inspired by everything and we are constantly chasing “our sound”. I think that is the main reason why.
AMP: What would you say is the biggest difference between your new EP, Hungry, High & Seeing Things, and your older material in regards to musical style?
CLAYTON: Our last EP was such a cool experience and some of the songs are still played in the set as of today. All of the old stuff has a special place in the ol’ ticker, of course. But this new EP just felt right from the jump. Even when we didn’t know what right or wrong was at the time. I can honestly say that it feels like we have finally found the direction we want to head into. In a weird way, we knew that the earlier songs weren’t what we truly wanted to be. And that’s how we know that these are.
AMP: Your songs have amazing hooks and harmonies. How does the songwriting work?
CLAYTON: It’s a wild process. We are all one big filter that ideas get processed through. It usually starts with a simple (but catch, in our minds) melody. That’s everything to us. Then, its got to have some sweet ass groove to it. Once we put that together, it’s about agreeing on the lyrics and writing a bridge/outro that’ll make ya wanna cry or make you want to close your eyes and forget that your operating a motor vehicle…metaphorically speaking.
AMP: Even though touring was off the table, did the pandemic have an upside for the band?
CLAYTON: It was a total upside. We were flipped upside down and didn’t know what the hell we were going to do. Even before the pandemic. Once we thought we’d figured out our next step out…shit hit the fan. But, it brought our heads together in a way that we can’t explain. Other than telling you to just listen to the EP.
AMP: What’s next for Kiss Kiss Bang?
CLAYTON: Unfortunately, we do not know. Because of the times we are living in, our venue owners, bands, sound guys, tour managers, merch guys, etc. have no idea what the f&$! they’re going to do. But, I think that’s always been the driving force behind people like us. So, I think everyone will be okay. The rock community has a wild way of holding itself up against the odds.
AMP: Best pizza topping?
CLAYTON: Simple. Sausage with extra cheese. And if you aren’t getting pan crust or deep dish, there’s something wrong. One bite, everyone knows the rules.
