LAW & CHAOS – ARTIST SHOWCASE

 

The Los Angeles based duo, Law & Chaos, are delivering something amazingly fresh and vibrant. Law & Chaos meshes elements of jazz and blues to create a cool and contemporary hybrid. The duo is comprised of trumpet player, singer and songwriter, Nick Andrea and veteran blues guitarist, TJ Sullivan. Andrea’s vocals are silky but at the same time intoxicatingly gravelly. His trumpet playing is tight and invigorating. Sullivan’s guitar is all so smooth yet full of fiery emotion.

Andrea began playing his instrument as a young boy only to take 30 year hiatus to pursue a successful law career. He is back and bringing creativity that is innovative while remaining true to his musical roots. Sullivan’s journey has been a true musician’s dream. Starting at the age of five, Sullivan quickly mastered his craft, launching a career that spans eight solo albums.

Law & Chaos recently released two singles that highlight their modern songwriting sensibilities. All the while, staying true to the rich traditions of their musical heritage.

The first single, “Skeletons in My Basement” is sleek jazz tune embellished with a glossy bass line and polished trumpet playing. Andrea’s voice is velvety and hip while Sullivan’s bluesy guitar solo is mint. The song’s entire ambiance evokes sophistication and refinement while still sounding decadent. Andrea shares the inspiration behind the song: “I joked to myself that maybe ‘Skeletons in My Closet' was not an apt phrase for me because, after all, my past was too big to keep in a closet – I thought: for me, I  would need a whole basement“. Fifteen minutes later, the song was written. The words came spilling out….the better songs are like that; they write themselves and you basically take dictation as the words announce themselves to you”.

Law & Chaos’ newest release is the blues infused “Missus 2nd Place”. The piece is a entertaining romp that showcases Sullivan’s guitar prowess and struts Andrea’s sexual and gritty vocal stylings. The song was written by Andrea, Sullivan and Rick Jones and produced by Craig T. Fall (Roger Miller, Stevie Wonder). “Misses 2nd Place” is the first installment in a dark blues trilogy exploring the journey from the depths of addiction and the road back to family and sanity.

Andrea provided insight into the theme behind the song. “No matter how far we stray from doing right by the people we love, there is a pathway home – if you have the courage to take it”. He admits that although the tune is not strictly autobiographical, it admittedly contains aspects of his escape from personal demons. Redemption never sounded so good.

The two singles by Law & Chaos are just a preview of their forthcoming album which should be a powerhouse of a release. Law & Chaos‘ sublime fusion of jazz and blues is a breath of fresh after the craziness of 2020.
