LO MOON
Lo Moon is a L.A. based ensemble whose mysterious ways took the music industry by storm last year. The buzz on the band was extremely high even though they had a minimal repertoire of material. Their seven minute single “Loveless”, a dreamy and elegant tune, perked everyone’s interest.
Lo Moon consists of Matt Lowell (Vocals/Guitar), Sam Stewart (Guitar) and Crisanta Baker (Synth/Bass). Lowell’s passionate voice and Stewart’s (son of the Eurythmic’s Dave Stewart) dignified and atmospheric guitar are perfect for their lush and refined songs. Baker’s elegant synth and bass adds another layer to their hypnotic sound.
After touring in 2017 with the likes of Phoenix and the Temper Trap LO Moon has finally released their first album appropriately entitled Lo Moon. Reminiscent of Roxy Music and the XX their music is sensually airy. Lo Moon’s lyrics are a dark and reflective tome on the perils of love. Stewart’s and Baker’s instrumentation is both sprawling and ethereal.
Lo Moon opens with “This Is It”, a melodic anthem with an awesome hook amid a dreamy backdrop. Next up is “Loveless” the a fore mentioned single with its brooding guitar and introspective lyrics. Lowell’s reflective voice and Baker’s spacey synth catapult this song to a new level.
“The Right Thing” and “Thorns” highlight LO Moon’s ambitious R&B leanings. On “Thorns” Stewart’s sparse guitar works well with the its fragile feel. “Tried To Make You My Own” reflects the powerfully romantic love songs the likes of Sade and Bryan Ferry. Lowell’s intonations draw us deep into his intimately personal yearnings. “Real Love” and “Wonderful Life” showcases the band’s and producer Chris Walla’s ability to exquisitely use all their space with an ambitious mix of soothing sonic enhancements.
Lo Moon’s initial release not only is a true representation of their uplifting and poignant music but also leaves the listener with a tenderly euphoric feel.
