NOTHING MORE – LIVE – IN THE DOME @THE OAKDALE THEATER

On May 28th, Nothing More brought their co-headlining tour with Asking Alexandria to the Dome in the Oakdale Theater in Wallingford with Atreyu and Eva Under Fire as support. The night started out on a sour note as Asking Alexandria had to bow out due to medical issues. But as usual, the show must go on.

The evening started with the Detroit band, Eva Under Fire. The group’s music is hard hitting and in your face. Lead vocalist Amanda Lyberg is charismatic and quite enjoyable. Her voice is powerful and full of explosive intensity. Guitarists Rob Lyberg and Chris Slapnik laid down audacious riffs while bassist Ed Gawlik III was tenacious. Corey Newsom’s drums were hammering. Eva Under Fire just released a killer EP entitled Blow.

They opened with two songs off the new EP. “Comatose” set the mood early with its driving beat and bold vocals. Eva Under Fire followed with their big hit “Blow”. The recorded song features Spencer Charnas from Ice Nine Kills. The tune is pulverizing and Lyberg had the audience pumping their fists. The room was relishing the fury the band was unleashing. “Heroin(e)” and “Unstoppable” came next and the crowd was definitely enjoying it. They ended the show with their cover of Journey’s “Separate Ways” with everyone singing along. It was a formidable performance.

I last saw Atreyu 6 months ago at the Webster Theater in Hartford for their Baptize tour. Everytime I catch the band they seem to get better and better. A good portion of tonight’s crowd were sporting Atreyu tees and hoodies. The band has amassed a huge following due to their fiery music and relentless touring. As soon as Atreyu hit the stage, the audience rushed the front of the venue. Lead Vocalist, Brandon Sailer knows how to carry the day. His compelling personality easily draws the fans in. His voice is spectacular with a stellar range. Besides Sailer, the band is comprised of Dan Jacobs (Guitar) Travis Miguel (Guitar) Marc McKnight (Bass/Unclean Vocals) and Kyle Rosa (Drums).

They opened the night with a rousing rendition of “Strange Powers of Prophecy” which enlivened the crowd. “Baptize” and “Becoming The Bull” followed. By now, the crowd was really into it. Circle pits began to form and Atreyu were eating it up. Sailer let the fans know how much he appreciated their support. The room was electric. “The Time Is Now”, Ex’s and Oh’s” and “Save Us” just added to the fury. By the time they played “Warrior” and final song “Blow”, everyone was feeling the heat. Atreyu gave it their all.

As soon as Nothing More appeared, the room erupted. Nothing More is another band I last saw at the Webster and what a difference a few years make. In 2019, they were great but tonight, the band was over the top. Jonny Hawkins was a human dynamo. He was all over the stage. His antics put a major spark in the house. Mark Vollelunga’s guitar was monstrous carrying incendiary riffs and solos. Daniel Oliver on bass destroyed and Ben Anderson’s drums were massive. The entire band was totally nailing it.

Their 14 song set opened with their brand new single, “Turn It Up Like (Stand In The Fire)”. The song has an addictive cadence and savage vocals. Hawkins’ theatrics were brazen and edgy as he flew through the inventive stage props. “Let ’em Burn”, “Christ Copyright”, “Mr. MTV”, and “Do You Really Want It’ brought the Dome to a total frenzy.

When Nothing More” played “Don’t Stop” and “Go To War”, the audience was in pure delight. The band was firing on all cylinders immersing the room with a volatile barrage of combustible sound. Another new song came next. “Tired of Winning” brought the heat. Nothing More ended with muscular versions of “Fadein/Fadeout”, “Ocean Floor” and “This Is The Time (Ballast)”.

Even though everyone missed Asking Alexandria, the night was a huge success. Nothing More was killer. Atreyu and Eva Under Fire were exciting and thoroughly hypnotic. A real good night of fierce rock and metal.
