OUT OF NOWHERE – SINGLE REVIEW & INTERVIEW

Out of Nowhere is an Iranian metalcore band that has been rocking the Persian peninsula for over a decade. The oppressive regime of the Islamic Republic of Iran has made heavy music illegal inside the country and metal bands often get arrested for their endeavors. However, regardless of the risk of being imprisoned, Out of Nowhere have actively been releasing music and playing live shows.

The band states: “We started 15 years ago in one of the most religious cities in Iran. Despite everyone saying you can’t make it, we didn’t give up our dreams, so we made the pact that we make it our goal to make sure we’ll all see a day that our message gets spread around the world. No matter what, no matter how many sticks and stones get thrown at us.“.

Out of Nowhere have recently released their newest single, “Blind Crow”. The song is a monster with driving guitar riffs and dramatic fills. From its opening notes, “Blind Crow” delivers an explosive beat with a hint of middle eastern seasoning. The vocals are propulsive and demand attention. The percussions batter the listener with pounding intensity. The song is a juggernaut of pure energy and angst. Out of Nowhere power through the song like a steamroller.

Speaking about the single: “We tried to describe the life cycle from the beginning till the end, painting all the pain and suffering most people carry through their lives. It can be depression, anxiety, or any other mental illness that we live with. We are ambitious enough to set this song as an example of how you can survive no matter how low you think you are right now. Just stay on your path and keep going“.

The following is a short interview with the band.

AMP: How difficult is it playing metal in a Muslim country like Iran?

OUT: Well, the problem is we cannot connect with our fans directly because there are no live shows here anymore. We had 3 underground shows with the fear of these getting canceled and causing us some trouble. But that cannot happen anymore (not due to Covid). We actually aim towards a worldwide fan base that we can connect through the internet and hopefully will play in various countries maybe soon.

AMP: How often do you actually get to play out and what kind of reception do you receive?

OUT: As I said before, we had 3 underground shows here in Iran. They were underground and sold out. We really got a perfect reception from the fans. They were really excited to see it happen because it’s kinda impossible to do it here. We have footage of the live shows on our Instagram.

AMP: Is there a metal or rock scene in Iran? Are there other bands that you can tour with?

OUT: Yes, there are lots of bands here, but they usually give up due to the situation and the money they have to pay for making their music without actually an income. Most of them cannot promote their bands the right way, so they usually fade out after a time.

AMP: What are the band’s major influences?

OUT: Well, there are many influences, but as you’ve asked, maybe the top ones are Periphery, Veil of Maya and Born of Osiris.

AMP: Blind Crow is a massive song. How would you categorize your sound?

OUT: Well, we are still trying to achieve our own unique sound, but, for right now, we can call the genre deathcore/djent.

AMP: Any plans for shows in Europe and the US?

OUT: We really want to make that happen soon. It’s actually really hard to do that from Iran by ourselves, but we are really trying to make it happen sometime after the pandemic.

AMP is totally impressed with Out Of Nowhere. Not only for their dynamic sound but the fact that they are actually placing themselves in danger for their music. This is a band that the music community should rally around to make sure they get heard.

They’re pretty good. It’s hard to be a successful band under the best circumstances, so their determination and persistence in the face of such tremendous roadblocks is really impressive and heartening.
