PUREBRED RECORDS
Last week I had the opportunity and privilege to meet with the body politic of Purebred Records. Purebred Records is a student run indie label based out of the University of New Haven who’s members are all A&R reps and has distinct committees to handle the many company functions. Legal and marketing are only two of many responsibilities managed by these committed students. They are learning first hand how to break a recording artist from signing to record promotion.
The whole concept intrigued me. Even though they informed me that there are other university based record labels (ex: Mad Dragon Records at Drexel University), I felt that Purebred’s framework was novel and a great learning tool for both musicians and music business majors.
Purebred was conceived by Douglas Foley, a junior, in 2012. Realizing that the university had a strong music program he wanted to utilize the extensive music industry experience of the UNH faculty. What started as an idea became a class and viable business.
Purebred’s faculty advisor is a prime example of the strong support available at UNH. Murray Krugman is a music industry veteran and stalwart who has produced multiple major artists including Johnny Winters, Blue Oyster Cult, and the Dictators. Since he is also an industry lawyer he is able to advise Purebred on the in and outs of recording and publishing contracts.
The staff at Purebred are extremely dedicated. These young adults are like sponges, absorbing everything and using this information to further hone their skills. They understand that once they graduate they will be well equipped to assimilate quickly into the fabric of the music industry. As one student stated “This program and the UNH faculty has broaden our horizons and helped us to think for ourselves”. This enterprise is developing the next crop of lawyers, managers, publicists and other careers in the entertainment trade.
Purebred has signed several artists in their short existence. Singer/Songwriter Mikki Hommel (L.P.-On the Moon), Hard rockers Strike Hard (L.P.-The Antagonist) and Indie sensations Jose Oyola and the Astronauts (L.P.-Hologram) are a few of their recent releases. New signings are rappers Joey Batts and Jobo. The staff at Purebred are as passionate as their talent in creating the best artisitc product.
In the short time we were together an overall feeling of determination was evident. I am sure many if not all of these amazing students will reshape the future of the entertainment industry.
