queen mars – ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

Chicago based singer/songwriter queen mars is truly fierce. She is a unique storyteller who combines her eclectic romantic experiences with no holds barred lyrics to create songs that illustrate the viciousness of love lost.

queen mars‘ music inventively meshes r&b and soul with modern day alternative pop in order to create a sound that is both edgy and fresh. Following such artists as SZA and Rihanna, she uses her songwriting skills to create poetic stories she calls, Kaleidoscope Pop: complex lyrics and colorful sounds.

queen mars is ready to release a five song EP entitled trust issues on April 9th. As a preview, she recently dropped the single, “Boys Like You”. The tune interlocks smooth rhythms and melodic beats with devastatingly brutal lyrics. queen mars‘ conclusions of amorous liaisons are dramatically brazen and to the point. She doesn’t mince words.

On “Boy Like You” queen mars states: “The song is a fuckboy anthem for all woman who #selflove and #selfcare’d their way through quarantine and want to reemerge as the bad bitches they are“. A brutal expose on her ex, she sings about the red flags and clear indicators of a fuckboy. She elaborates: “I can’t help but associate every characteristic of this guy with being a fuckboy. From the clothes he wore, to the words he said, to the car he drove. I’ll be damned if I ever date a guy with a Corolla“.

“Boys Like You” opens with a spacy synth before queen mars‘ vocals pop accompanied with a funky beat. Her voice is creamy and the music is erotically flowing. The chorus’ hook is monstrous. The entire song has you laid back and relaxing but the lyrics are something else. Poignant and ferocious, her word are like daggers.

That boys like you don’t have feeling

Boys like you are not willing to change for love

You want a good girl to fuck it up

Gives you her all but it’s not enough

And girls like me, fail to see

That boys like you never believe

In happy endings

Then she sings:

But you were so fucking hot

Late night intermission in the parking lot

Left our best friends in the hotel locked

Now I see

queen mars is an amazing talent ready to break out. In short time she will be a new planet circling the musical stratosphere. She is the novel artist who bridges many worlds and in turn reshapes the minds of her listeners.
